♦ SCHOOL COMMITTEES MEET At the monthly meeting of the Wharenui School Committee Mr P. G. Stringer presided. The headmaster, Mr T. A. Gates, reported that 32 new pupils had enrolled at the school, and the roll number was approximately 440. Accounts amounting to £l3 8s Gd were passed for payment.
The secretary reported the receipt of various donations to the picnic fund. It was decided to call a special meeting of householders for Wednesday, February 21, with a view to discussing means of improving the school finances.
The headmaster reported that two extra assistant teachers had been granted to Wharenui. The monthly meeting of the Riccarton School Committee was presided over by Mr E. Evans. The headmaster, Mr V. J. Gamble, reported that the school was in good condition after the holidays and that 19 new children had been admitted. Final arrangements were made for the school picnic. Messrs Wood and Thiele were appointed a works committee for the ensuing month. Swimming: The lack of entries at the Riccarton Amateur Swimming Club's carnival was deplored by one of the spectators present, who said he could remember the time when the club was perhaps the most progressive and enterprising in Canterbury. The time was recalled when Australian swimmers raced in the baths, and it was impossible to gain admittance without fear of being pushed in. However, the club has been revived during the last two years, and with a bigger active membership should come to the front once more. Tennis Club's Pavilion The new pavilion of the Upper Riccarton Domain Tennis Club will be officially opened to-morrow afternoon and a Yankee tournament will be decided after the opening ceremony.
