NAVY LEAGUE

(" ANTERBUIIY BRANCH A using from references tu the financial position of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League at the meeting of the general committee of the leaguelast night, the necessity for increasing the usefulness of the branch and thereby stimulating interest in the navy was emphasised, and a sub-com-mittee was set lip to go into the matter. The meeting was attended by Messrs J ,1. Dougall (chairman), H. L. IJowker. C. E. Jones, T. M. Charters, T. H. Foster, A. W. MacGillivray, C. G. Curtis, Colonel J. Murphy, Lieuten-ant-Commander IX. C. E. Harding, and Mrs 11. Wyatt. The chairman referred to the financial position of the branch and said that, unless further economies were made the branch would be in danger of ceasing to function. The secretary (Mr C. J. Treleaven) said that if they economised and did nothing else they might as well shut up shop. He urged that a sub-com-mittee should be sc' up to consider ways and means of increasing the work and usefulness of the league with the view of stimulating interest in the navy.

Colonel J. Murphy said that although the financial position of the league was not. rosy, the league's friends amongst the military admired what the league was doing. Probably they did not know the financial position of the league, nnd he mentioned the fact of their admiration so that the committee would not feel downhearted. Many of the public also admired the work being done. Much credit was due to the league for its constant publicity respecting the navy. Mr Bnwker: f think that the wool kings might help us. The chairman: 1 dn nut think that they are in clover yet. The following sub-committee was set up:—-Messrs Dougall, .loniv. Charters, Foster, Bowker, Colonel Murphy, the secretary, and Mrs Wyatt. Sea Cadets Lieutenant-Commander Harding reported on the sea cadets, and said that they were going in for miniature rifle shooting, and also were endeavouring to get the regulations relaxed so that they could use their wireless transmitting set to exchange messages with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Mr A. K. Anderson's Appointment The chairman referred to Mr A. K. Anderson's appointment as principal of Scots College, Sydney, and said that Mr Anderson was an old and a consistent member of the league, and for some years a very active member of the general committee. He moved: "That the Canterbury branch of the Navy League very heartily congratulates Mr A. K. Anderson upon his appointment as principal of Scots College, one of the leading schools ot' Sydney, and trusts that he will have a happy time in his new position." The branch, he said, was very sorry to lose Mr Anderson.

Mr Bowker, in seconding, said that Mr Anderson always had been a great friend of the league, and all the scholars attending St. Andrew's College, under his advice, had become members of the junior league. The motion was agreed to.

Replying to a question, t"he chairman said that the annual meeting of the branch would be held about the beginning of April.
