A tremendous school of barracouta, numbering some thousands and covering more than an acre of water, is reported to have been seen by a New Plymouth fisherman. Mr J. Matthews, this week off Sunken Rock, a half-submerged pinnacle off New Plymouth between Moturoa Island and Seal Rock. He was chopping up bait with which to attract schnapper, when the barracouta rushed up round the boat. As they broke the surface and fought for the bait which was being thrown overboard, the water was churned in a circle of at least 200 yards round the boat. The fiherman had lost 50 hooks before he decided to give up for the time being.
