TWO RECORDS BROKEN CARNIVAL AT TEPID BATHS i'\cc]tUorialty hue raring nas « itnessed last at the carnival promoted hy the Somerficld Club at the Tepid Baths. Two Cantfrbury records were broken, and a particularly line time was recorded by C. Cliff, of Kast Chvistehui'ch, when gwiinmin:; into second place behind K. McConville in the men's 880 yards championship. Cliff, who is an intermediate swimmer, finished in Umin 39sec, na compared with the previous Canterbury intermediate record o! iLlmin lOsee. Tha same swimmer lowered thn Canterbury time for the intermediate bn"s' 220 yards championship from 2nnn 41 sec to 2min 36 2-ssec in retaining his title. This was a very close finish, and U. Kingdon's time would be well below the previous record. In the 880 yards championship I). H. Svmcs went out fast in the first two laps, b-it was rapidly overhauled by McGonullo nnd Cliff. These two raced together for the rest of the course, with McConville liever more than 15 yards ahead. Willi two lengths to go Cliff drew level, but the winner had enough strength left to reach the tape four yards in front. Symes finished third quite well back. Some very good diving was shown by Miss a. Smith to win the handicap dive. Kach of her three efforts was neatly and gracefully executed. A water polo match between the Canter bury A and B teams was played afterwau.s for practice. Results were: — j JUNIOIt GIRLS' 100 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP CXew Zealand record. Imm 3-5 see, Miss I>.
