AMATEUR CENTRE MEETS ARRANGEMENTS FOR COMING .MEETINGS Business concerning several important fixtures to be held within the next month was considered at a meeting of the Canterbury Amateur Athlt|';ic Centre last evening. Mr J. K. Moloney presided and there were also present: Messrs E. H. Cross, R. Beattie, M. Leadbetter, W. C. Flewellyn, J. H. Murphy, E. Todd, L. G. Willis, and C. Sanderson (honorary secretary). The Waimate Club forwarded the programme for its meeting on February 21. at which the Australian athletes will make their first appearance in New Zealand. The list of events, all handicaps, was as follows:—100 yards, 100 yards short limit, 220 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards, 880 yards, one ' mile, 220 yards secondary schoolboys, high jump, hop, step, and jump, long jump, putting the shot, throwing the javelin, women's 100 yards, women's 120 yards, half-mile, one mile, two miles cycling, and one mile scratch cycling. The value of I the trophy list seemed rather high. After a short discussion it was decided to advise the Waimate club that the centre could not take responsibility for the financing of the four cycling events included in the programme. Remits for Conference. Mr Todd was appointed manager of the Canterbury team for the New Zealand championships, and delegate to the conference of centres. The following remits were drawn up for submission to the annual conference of delegates in Wellington on February 16:— (1) "That an endeavour be made to have an Australia-New Zealand meeting inaugurated: or failing that, an endeavour be made to have New Zealand competitors admitted to the Australian championships." Mr Moloney, who proposed this remit, said that there had, for a long time, been a neeglect of intercolonial meetings, and there was at present no opportunity for an athlete to represent New Zealand.

(2) "That the council be asked to organise a summer school for the improvement of field events, at some central town, perhaps Palmerston North, at Christmas, on the lines ol the field event school to be held at Oamaru next Christmas."

(3) "That walking events be deleted from the New Zealand championships owing to the farcical position often arising in the contests." (4) "That the council take immediate steps to obtain and distribute moving films for training purposes."

Otago v. Canterbury.

The Otago centre wrote agreeing to March 24 as the date for the Otago v. Canterbury meeting at Oamaru.

Mr Todd asked whether it would not be possible for the meeting to be held on a better ground than the one at Oamaru.

The arrangement of the ground and the programme in co-operation with the Otago centre, was left to a subcommittee consisting of Messrs Moloney, Beattie, and Todd. Mr Beattie said the Westport Club had suggested that some members of the Canterbury team from the New Zealand championships should go to Westport from Wellington, competing in Westport on Monday, February 19. He said that already several athletes had indicated their intention- of making the trip if it were carried out. The Westport Club was prepared to meet the extra expense. The matter was left in abeyance. The application of M. McDonald (Waimate) for reinstatement, will be forwarded to the New Zealand council without recommendation.
