FLOWER SHOW

EXCELLENT DISPLAY AT FENDALTON GOOD DAHLIA EXHIBITS The second annual flower show of the Fendalton district! was opened yesterday afternoon by Mr T. Chapman in the Sunday schoolroom, Clyde road. The display this season was remarked on by all present as a considerable advance on that of last year, not only in the quality of the blooms, but also in the layout of the exhibits. Mr M. J. Barnett, one of the judges in the flower section, said that the whole tone of the show was excellent, and he was especially pleased with the layout. The cut flowers were an outstanding feature, and the collections of cuti blooms saw very close competition for the awards. The dahlia exhibit was of a very high standard, with the entries of L. B. Hart outstanding. His entry, which was awarded the championship, in the decorative, one variety, class was a notable bloom. W. R. Toon won the champion and blue riband in the gladioli section with an excellent spike which was irreproachable in size and colour. In introducing Mr Chapman, the vicar of St. Barnabas, the Rev. F. B. Redgrave, said he would like to express his thanks to the Canterbury Horticultural Society for its everready help, and the Papanui Society for the loan of its vases. The judges also were deserving of praise for the able manner in which they had carried out their duties. Mr Chapman said he felt very much honoured by being asked to open the show. He realised that the standard this year was much higher than that of the former show, and the able committee was to be congratulated on its efforts. He then declared the show to be open. Mr L. B. Hart, president of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, suggested, in a short address, that the committee should make a point of encouraging the showing of dahlias. A much better display would be available if the show were hold later in the year. The judges were as follows:—Roses, cut flowers, gladioli, and dahlias, Messrs H. L. Darton and M. J. Barnett; fruit, vegetables, and pot plants, Mr F. Jones; decorative section, Mesdames P. Merton and H. Harman. The proceeds of a cake and produce stall, run by Mrs Redgrave and helpers, will be devoted to the Home Mission Fund for helping work in the smaller parishes. The show will conclude this evening with an auction sale of produce at 9 p.m. The awards were:— GLA UIOLI. Six- varieties (2): G. 11. Miller 1, M. Dixon 2. Three varieties (3): AV. R. Toon 1, A. J.
