The felling of 4,000,000 feet of kauri will commence shortly between Whangaparapara Harbour and the east coast of the Great Barrier Island. The Kauri Timber Company has called tenders for the construction of a rail track and for the handling of the logs. The block to be dealt with lies on the eastern slope, and the task of getting the huge logs to the shore involves raising them to the summits of four high ridges, and then lowering them down on the other side, a total distance of some six miles. This work has been done on the western slope in the past by four hauling engines and two other locomotives.
