THE MISUSE OF ENGLISH

TO TUB EDITOR OK THK P**.SR. Sir, —I am glad to see that "Euphony" shows "T.A.S." that he and I are not quarrelling, and I am sure he will not mind my describing him as—you funny man. Of course "gestures make conversation easier;" take the lift of an eyebrow or the closing of an eyelid. I am told that in "gay Parce" talk is helped along with the hands and shoulders. I lake it that talk is the development of sounds for the transmission of thought. I expect that most of your readers know that when two minds are in tune, thoughts can be transmitted without sounds. When we find ourselves transferred to the thought plane we will find speech too slow and inadequate—the "music of the spheres," I am told, is wonderful. I have never heard a trained Esperantist speak, but I believe euphony was one of Dr. Zamenhof's objectives "40 years ago," as Mr Collins tells us. It was then that I heard the unforgettable voice of Maud Jeffreys, with its soft Florida intonation. (I gave her her first motor-car rides.) —Yours, etc., PETER TROLOVE. December 28, 1933.

THE NURSE MAUDE ASSOCIATION FOR DISTRICT NURSING TO TIIK EDITOR OF THE PKESS. Sir, —At the close of the year I feel I must express the gratitude of the nurses and myself for the manner in which you have helped on our work, by promptly putting in our appeals and acknowledgments. Your sympathetic interest has done much to keep us going in difficult times. Wishing you a very prosperous New Year. — Yours, etc., S. G. MAUDE. December 28, 1933.
