FIRE BRIGADE j The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire ® Brigade has received the following donations to the brigade's social fund: —Mr A. Varney, £1 Is; Messrs Chang Bros., £1 Is; and Mr A. Miller, Park terrace, £1 Is. Tuis in Lyttelton. Tuis, which have been heard for the last week or two in the patches -\ of native bush above Lyttelton, are . now reported to be visiting gardens t in the upper portion of the town where they are feeding on berries. One resident states that a pair have been in his garden daily for the last week, and seemed very tame. He expressed the hope that they would not be molested by boys. The birds, which are identified by their dark plumage and white throat feathers, are protected. Rowers Stranded. Two members of the Lyttelton Rowing Club, E. Hannah and H. May, with a coxswain, Ray Sutton, who had one of the club's boats out on Wednesday evening, had a trying experience. They crossed the harbour early in the evening and went ashore at Charteris Bay to visit friends there. On setting out to return to Lyttelton it was found that the wind hau raised a jobble on the water which made progress very hazardous. Alter three attempts they gave it up. Some anxiety had been caused in Lyttelton by their long absence, but fears were set at rest when, at 9.30 p.m. Mr F. E. Sutton, father of the coxswain, received a telephone message that the trio were stranded at Charteris Bay and that the boy had been given a bed at the St. John's Bible Class camp.
