-—♦ —- Mr A. C. Bretherton has returned from a business trip to the West Coast. Dr. R. Campbell Begg, leader of the New Zealand Legion, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning, and spent the night in Christchurch. Messrs P. G. Greenwood and W. C. Brydon were among the passengers from Wellington by the Wahine yesterday morning. Mr A. S. Burgess (Wanganui), president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, is visiting Christchurch, and is staying at the United Service Hotel. Messrs F. S. Laycock. P. M. Aikman (Dunedin), L. W. Stanbury (Wainui), and S. P. Warburton (Bradford, England) are among the latest arrivals at Warner's Hotel. The appointment of Dr. R. S. Stewart, of Christchurch, as house surgeon at the Gore Hospital, was confirmed by the Southland Hospital Board at its monthly meeting held on Thursday. On the recommendation of its medical superintendent (Dr. L. C. McNickle), the Southland Hospital Board at its monthly meeting on Thursday appointed Dr. David Pottinger honorary consulting physician to the Southland Hospital. Sir Henry Buckleton, retiring general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was on Thursday presented with a gold-mounted ebony walking stick as a personal mark of appreciation from his colleagues representing the Associated Banks of New Zealand. At the monthly reunion of the Christchurch branch of the Wellington College Old Boys' Association on Thursday evening, members stood in silence as a mark of respect to their late president, Mr W. M. Hamilton. Mr Oscar Garden, the Christchurch aviator who flew from England to Australia three years ago, is at present in Palestine, where he has been successful in forming an aero club at the town of Tel-Aviv. Mr Garden, who has been in Palestine for about nine months, intends to remain there for some time still. Mr James Hislop, headmaster of the Napier Central School, who is about to retire after 51 years' service, was entertained yesterday by members of the Hawke's Bay Education Board. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) is expected from Wellington by to-day's interlsland steamer and, as the House is to sit on Monday, it is probable that he will return to Wellington this evening.

Mr S. Hollander, who has been living in Auckland for the last five months, has been transferred to Christchurch, and he will leave for the south by the express to-morrow evening. Messrs H. L. Bowker, a member of the committee of the Canterbury Pilgrims' and Early Settlers' Association, and G. W. Hungerford, the secretary of the association, visited Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson on Thursday and found him improved in health though still confined to his bed. Mr R. L. Grant, general manager for British Empire Films, Ltd. (N.Z.), and personal representative in New Zealand for British International Pictures, Elstree, is visiting Christchurch for the opening of "The Squatter's Daughter" at the Plaza Theatre.
