MOTORISTS CONFER

QUARTERLY MEETING OP UNION" (I'-BESS ASSOCIATION TELIGHAM.) INVERCARGILL, December 8. The quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union was held here today. It was decided to urge the Unemployment Board and the Public Works Department! immediately to investigate with a view to proceeding with the completion of the Haast Pass road as a major unemployment undertaking. Referring to the annual drivers' license, Mr D. J. Wesney (Southland) said that certain countries issued a license, attached to which were renewal insets, covering six years. The Southland Association thought such a license would effect a considerable saving in work and cost, and it recommended that the executive should discuss the matter further with the authorities. The recommendation was adopted. A resolution was passed requesting that the Government be asked to give an assurance that if any commission is set up dealing with the question of derating, then motorists should be given representation on such commission. It was maintained that the motorists as a section were carrying more than their burden of the rural roading problem, and that motor taxation should not be diverted from road construction and maintenance and other purposes. The conference approved on broad principles the Canterbury Association's free road service scheme, and it was resolved that the affiliated associations be asked fully to consider it in the meantime, and to report at the next meeting.
