ADDINGTON MARKET

BIG SUPPLIES OF STOCK

The dry. weather of the last Jew weeks, with no immediate prospect of improvement, forced a good deal more than the normal quantity of stock on to the market at Addington on Wednesday. All sections were well filled, and prices generally were weaker in consequence. Most of the large offering of store sheep was made up of wethers and dry ewes. The yarding contained a number of lines of travelled wethers, but all met a good sale except the poorest, which were inclined to be cheaper. Ewes and lambs sold consistently well, a line of stud Southdowns with lambs making more than £l. They were outstandingly good, and appearod to be worth the money. The demand all round did not have the buoyancy of the last two or three weeks, but there was little difficulty in making sales, the only lots that were passed being a few lines of really poor and small wethers. The following table gives a comparison of the prices ruling on Wednesday with those of last year:—

Wethers— Good halfbred to 81 Medium lmlfbred •Small halfbred .. Good two-touth halfbred to 101 Forward rrossbred Ord. crossbred .. —• Fat Lambs. The lamb entry was 1600, and contained a good proportion of high quality lines. The heavier lambs, of which there were too many, were not keenly bought, and generally ranged round 7d per lb. The lighter lambs made the full freezing schedule of 7.Jd, and occasionally more, where a butcher wanted a particularly attractive line. Exporters bought steadily, and took a good number of the heavier lambs. Fat Sheep. The fat sheep section was well filled, many vendors having been forced on the market by diminishing feed supplies There were a number of North island and Chatham Island lines forward, the North Island sheep generally being most attractive. The market opened sluggishly with ewes well back, and a slackened enquiry for wethers. Over the whole sale, ewes were 3s a head and wethers Is a head cheaper than they were last week. Passings were fairly frequent, especially among the northern consignments.

Fat Cattle. The fat cattle entered numbered 500 head, a total *which in hot weather is at least 150 head too big for Addington, and is probably 200 more than Wednesday's demand could have absorbed. There were a few good lines of steers and heifers entered, but the

bulk of the offerings consisted of cows, about half of which were of extremely poor quality. The consequence was that steers were cheaper by Ids to a head, and cows by upwards of 30s. Some of the cows were unsaleable, but thev were a poor lot. sto.:.-s- . -■ -
