—♦ THRESHING MILL EMPLOYEES THE MAIN ITEMS

The new award for North Canterbury threshing mill employees, which was approved by the Arbitration Court on December 6, and which will continue in force until July 31, 1934, has been filed at the office of the clerk of awards (Mr W. Parker). The following are the main items of the schedule: — Rates of pay: When the crop does not run at least 90 bushels an hour, workers shall be paid by the hour, the minimum rate for workers employed by the hour shall be Is 9d an hour; time lost through the mill being stopped for repairs or for other unavoidable cause, or in shifting from farm to farm, shall not be computed as time worked. Determination of employment: This clause shall apply also to the cook, and, further, the employer shall, if and when requested to do so by a majority of the men employed on the mill, dismiss the cook. Food and accommodation: A sleeping whare, a cook's galley, cooking utensils, and coal shall be supplied to the men by the employer at a charge of Is a man a week, and the food supplies shall be provided on the cooperative system; the wages for a cook shall be £4 a week and found, except in the case of American mills and mills of similar pattern. Seven days constitute a cook's week. Holidays: Easter Monday shall be observed as a holiday; Sunday threshing is prohibited. Piecework: When the crop runs 90 bushels an hour or more, piecework may be worked at not less than the following rates: Seventeen ghinwg and sixpence per 1000 bushels for wheat or barley; 15s 6d per 1000 bushels of oats. Shifting mill: All men shall assist in the shifting, packing and setting up of the mill, and any extra pay for such shall be mutually agreed upon at the beginning of the season between the men employed on the mill and the mill owner.
