AUSTRALIAN TAX ON FLOUR
MEASURE PASSED STORMY SITTING IN HOUSE (UHITID PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ZLICTMC TBLEGRAPH— COPYRIGHT.) (Received December 8, 9.50 p.m.) CANBERRA, December 8. After a stormy sitting lasting nearly 30 hours the House of Representatives agreed to the bill imposing a sales tax of £4 5s a ton on flour. Seven Government supporters voted with the Opposition, but the Ministry had solid support from the Country party. The bill has also passed all stages in the Senate. Senator A. O. Batman (South Australia) declared that in some states bakers would make an extra farthing on each two-pound loaf if the price of bread were raised a penny. Bakers in all states except New South Wales would make £300,000 additional profit. HOUSEWIVES' THREAT TO BAKERS BOYCOTT AGAINST DEAUER BREAD (Received December 8, 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 8. The Housewives' Association is organising a boycott of bakers if bread prices are increased. The leader of the housewives states that enquiries among bakers showed that they were able to make a profit at fourpence a loaf over the counter. [A message published on December 6 stated that the price of v ;read had been raised a halfpenny to 6d delivered, sid over Ihe counter.]
