THURSDAY. (Before Mr E, D. Mosley, S.M.) BICYCLE THEFTS ALLEGED. A young man. whose name was suppressed in the meantime, for whom Mr P. P. J. Amotfeo appeared, was remanded till to-day on two charges of the theft of bicycles. Bail at £3O, with one surety of £SO, was allowed. DRUNK IN CHARGE OF CART. Benjamin John O'Connell, a miner, aged 40, appeared on charges of being found drunk in charge of a horse and cart, and of driving a cart at night without lights. O'Connell was fined £3, in default one month's imprisonment on the first charge, and was convicted and discharged on the second. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. James Campbell pleaded not guilty to a charge of using obscene language in St. Asaph street. He was fined £3 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment with hard labour. For using obscene language Leah Andrew (Mr D. W. Russell) was convicted and fined £3 and costs in default one month's imprisonment with hard labour. She was allowed a week to pay. THEFT OF OVERCOAT. Leonard Keith Aldridge, on a charge of stealing an overcoat, valued at 15s, the property of some person or persons unknown, was convicted and ordered to come up _ for sentence if called upon within six months. FALSE PRETENCES. Arnold Vaughan Sutton, alias Melville, aged 32 years, a mechanic, of no fixed abode, was charged with being a rogue and vagabond in that he endeavoured to Impose upon a certain private individual by a fraudulent representation with a view to obtain money. He was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment. I BROKEN WINDOWS. | Alexander James Churton (Mr P. P. J. Amodeo) pleaded not guilty to charges of breaking a pane of glass valued at 12s 6d and two panes of glass valued at 255, the property of F. J. Jacobsen. i Sub-Inspector Edwards said that the complainant was the mother-in-law of 1 the accused. About midnight on November 4 stones were thrown | through two windows and footsteps I were heard on the street outside. The : complainant saw nobody, but when ' she went out to telephone the police she saw the accused standing at a street corner nearby. While at the Agricultural and Pastoral Show, the complainant accused her son-in-law of breaking the windows. He admitted he had done so and threatened to ! break more. On the night of Novem- ; ber 14 the complainant saw the accused throw a stone through another window. I "There is evidently a good deal of feeling between the parties," said the I Magistrate, "but I am not entirely ; satisfied, and accused will get the ! benefit of the doubt." The charges were dismissed. CHARGES DISMISSED. John Robert McKenzie was charged i with assaulting George Ross Stevenj son. It was alleged that McKenzie I struck Stevenson after an incident in i Yaldhurst road, when, it was stated, I defendant's motor-car had narrowly ! escaped striking a racehorse belong- ! ing to defendant. Stevenson was charged with negligent driving and with failing to stop when requested to do so, while approaching an unguided horse. It was stated that the horse was worth £SOO. The magistrate dismissed the : charges against Stevenson and dealt with the charge againet McKenzie similarlv, under the provisions of section 19 of the Offenders' Probation , Act. The magistrate said he considered that McKenzie's action in [ striking Stevenson was entirely unj justifiable, but that conviction for the | offence, which might have the effect of excluding him from racecourses, would be disproportionate to its seriousness. The magistrate stipulated that McKenzie should express regret for the incident, and that he should pay the sum of £2 to the court poor box. The two men shook hands in court. Mr C. S. Cecil Herbert Hoskin, Inspector of Awards, claimed a penalty of £lO from James Burrows, of Oxford, baker, for failure to pay an employee, John Teale, award rates of wages and overtime. A penalty of 10s was imposed. A penalty of 10s was imposed on Teale for accepting less than the award rates of pay. CLAIM FOR COMMISSION FAILS. Hutchinson, White, Ltd.. of Christchurch, auctioneers (Mr W. F. Tracy), claimed from O. White, of Selwyn street, tobacconist (Mr T. Milliken), the sum of £ls commission at 5 per cent, on the purchase price of a tobacconist's business. The magistrate gave judgment for the defendant with costs. CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. w. W. Hewinson, of Christchurch (Mr M. W. Simes), claimed from W. A. S. Davidson, .alesman (Mr L. B. Freeman), the sum of £9 Is 5d damages allegedly for loss suffered through the defendant having sold him a motorcycle and which allegedly the defendant fraudulently represented to be in perfect 6rder and condition. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £5 and costs. (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) CLAIM FOR MONEY RECEIVED. D. Oliver, of Christchurch, married woman, elaimed from E. Massey, of Selwvn street, married woman, the sum of £l3. received from Hutchinson, White and Company, Ltd., for the use of plaintiff. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £l2 and costs.
