COUNTY COUNCILS

SELWYN Members of the Selwyn County Council present at the monthly meeting, held at Hororata, were: Crs. W. Gilmour (chairman), F. J. Andrew, N. J. Brown, G. H. Grigs, G. Hight, R. H. Johnston, and W. Stone. The chairman of the Main Highways Board wrote stating that the board proposed to visit the southern portion of the South Island next January, and an opportunity would then be available for discussing any matters of mutual interest. The district representative of the board also wrote advising that an additional amount of £IOO had been made available from highway funds for maintenance on the Darfleld-Arundel main highway. The Commissioner • of Unemployment wrote giving details of farm work permissible under the No. 5 scheme. Future work to be carried out under the scheme was to be restricted to purely developmental farming operations such as bushfelling, fencing, scrub-cutting, and any other work calculated to increase the carrying capacity of the farm. Advice was also received that men on this scheme would be eligible for holidays for the week ending December 30 and January 6. In the case of the Selwyn County payment would be made for the first of these weeks and not for that ending on January 6, owing to that period being the ordinary standdown week. Accounts to the amount of £543 /s Id were passed for payment. Road classification was again brought before the notice of the council following further information placed before it by the Transport Department. Information was received from the Rangiora County Council, the local body controlling the operation of the local traffic inspector, that the cost to the Eyre County for the period ending September 30 was only £4 8s 2d. Councillors considered the result most satisfactory and made complimentary references to the work of the inspector. Dixon complained that the Transport Department was requiring him to register his tractor and make other payment's because he moved the tractor from one farm to another, a distance of more than one mile. It was decided to support his complaint to the Minister for Transport. It was agreed to reimburse the Waimakariri Water Supply Board the additional cost of putting in larger pipes in two water-race crossings on the Eyre-Cust road, as that was done for the convenience of county ratepayers.
