Reminders. Nominations for the Dunedin and Marton meetings will close to-day. Acceptances for the Hororata Racing Club's annual meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Monday at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Nominations for the Waikouaiti Racing Club's annual meeting will close with the secretary at Waikouaiti at 9 p.m. on Monday. Nominations for the Oamaru Jockey Club's New Year meeting will close with the secretary at Oamaru at 9 p.m. on Monday. Omitted. Ramo was omitted from the list of ■weights for the Hororata Cup, published yesterday. His weight is 8-1. Nominated for Ellerslie. In addition to the Riccarton-trained horses weighted for the Auckland Cup and, Railway Handicap, the following have been nominated for other events at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting:—Motunau, Control, Variant. Horn's Reef. Cricket Bat, and Grand Review. Returning from America. Letters to friends in Gisbome from C. Morse, the v/ell-known New Zealand horse-trainer, who formerly had his establishment at Gisborne, indicate that he will return to New Zealand on December 28. He will leave San Francisco on December 12, and during his trip to the Dominion the horses Pillow Flight and Tea Trader, in charge of which he went to the United States, will enjov a spell in California. It is likely that Morse will resume operations in California late ill March. Kiccarton Training Notes. Track conditions were very hard for training operations at Riccarton yesterday, and many trainers would appreciate a soaking rainfall. The No. 6 grass was open for fast work, but a good deal was done on the plough, ■which was heavy early following artificial watering overnight. The first half-hour of the early morning galloping and another half-hour during the breakfast interval were set aside for reverse work by horses booked to race at Ellerslie. On the Plough. Cricket Bat galloped seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, and Copyist c.nd Horn's Reef ran half a mile in 52sec. Rocket and Nightly were companions in a useful task over nine furlongs. They took 52sec for the first half, and were together until a hundred yards from the post, at which stage Rocket drew out and beat his mate by half a length. They were not out against time, and little notice need be taken of the result of the gallop, but at the same time Rocket appeared to be going a little better than Nightly. The latter has been set a difficult task at the Hororata fixture with 9-0, but will be produced. Shatter, with Imperial Spear as a mate for the last half-mile, covered six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the last three in 37sec. This was a good gallop in the conditions, but only in keeping with Shatter's usual track ability. The Right Way. All the foregoing gallops were done the reverse way, and going the right way Starshooter and Some Shamble did well in recording lmin 16 3-ssec for six furlongs. High Rank and Pleasant Memory ran the same distance in lmin 19 4-ssec, and Argentic followed in lmin 20sec. The last-named looks well after his race at Ashburton. and should again race prominently next week. He and his stable-mates, Monastic • and Drumfire, will race at the southern holiday meetings. Bright Red and Sibella strode over five furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec, the last three in 38 l-ssec, and Monastic covered a furlong further in lmin 19sec. Niggerhead and Royal Sceptre ran half a mile in 52 3-ssee, and Doiran and High Tor recorded 50sec for a similar task. ■ Metal Bird easily accounted for Wise Choice at the end of six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Vintage, joined by Cinders at the half-mile, galloped six furlongs in lmin 16 2-ssec, the pair finishing together. Vintage will be ridden by D. O'Connor, at the Hororata meeting. His stable-mates, Gaysome, Final Shot, and Highbrow were given easy work over five fujrlongs. Red Dance sprinted home three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. On the Grass. Guarantee sprinted three furlongs in 37sec, the reverse way. Southdown and Great Star were together throughout a six furlong task in lmin 17sec, the last three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Great Star went well, and appeared to better advantage than Southdown, to whom he conceded a big weight. The latter did not strike out as freely as usual, and evidently did not appreciate the reverse way of going. Croupier also went the reverse way, covering six furlongs in lmin 17 3-ssec, the last three in 39 2-ssec. True Shaft reeled of? five furlongs going round the right way in lmin 3sec, the last three in 38 l-ssec. Haere Tonu and Nightguard ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec, finishing abreast, after Nightguard had held a good lead to within a few chains of the post. Bell Hill and Cleaner recorded 50sec for half a mile, and similar time was

credited to Marquillo, and also Proscenium. • . . Control comfortably covered six furlongs in lmin 18sec, the first three in 37sec. Ramo and Rational 11. were responsible for a useful effort over seven furlongs, taking lmin 31 3-ssec, the last three in 39sec. Improved. Minerval attracted attention by reeling off six furlongs in lmin 16sec, Elude accompanying him over the last half, which occupied 51sec. Minerval did not show any soreness either before or after the work, and in the face of his form at the New Zealand Cup meeting he has been given every chance again to earn distinction at the Hororata fixture. Off the Scene. Hurlingham galloped seven furlongs attractively in lmin 29 l-ssec, taking 50 l-ssec for the first half. His brother, Ranelagh, has been an - absentee since the Ashburton meeting, suffering from a burst heel which affected him before racing on Saturday, and manifested itself seriously in the race. He is at present under treatment, and is not likelv to race over the holidays. Tout le Monde and Silver Jest sprinted three, furlongs in 37 3-ssec. For EUerslie. Variant ran half a mile in 50 4-ssec, taking 38sec for the last three furlongs. Friday Night accompanied her for the first three furlongs and again shaped well. Variant is to go with Southdown to Ellerslie, to contest the juvenile handicap events. Grand Review galloped six furlongs in lmin 20sec. She is to accompany Great Star to Ellerslie. Coast Visitors. Verden gave a smart display in galloping six furlongs in lmin 15 3-ssec. He was assisted home by Sky Rest, a three-year-old filly by Robespierre from Sky Quest, who is to be taken by her breeder-owner-trainer, R. Adamson, to the West Coast circuit with Verden. Their stablemate, Riri, who proved himself the best handicap performer during the last two Coast circuits, will have to be left at home this year, on account of acute lameness. „ , Night Recital ran five furlongs m lmin ssec, and Eupator reeled off half a mile in 52sec. Sweet Agnes covered six furlongs in lmin 15 l-ssec, the last half in 51sec. Manetho gave Bright Shade a start commencing a seven furlong task, and they finished together in lmin 32 2-5 sec. , i Weatherly finished slightly in front of Delice, at the end of five furlongs in lmin 3 3-ssec, the last three in 39 3-ssec. Has Not Thrived. The two-year-old filly, Safety Zone, by British Empire from Zaragoza, has been put into' work again by F. D. Jones. She was put aside after being broken in last season, to give her a chance to furnish, but she failed to build up to any extent, and is still very backward. Coming On. Streamline, the two-year-old halfbrother by Day Comet to Fast Passage, acquitted himself well in a three furlong sprint yesterday. Juniper Reinstated. Another attempt is to be made to win some money with Juniper, tiid the seven-year-old gelding ss rejoined J. Lindsay's stable. He is naturally backward in condition following his long spell, but it is hoped that he may race on the West Coast. On the Coast. The Cockpit—Ennea filly, nominated for the Trial Plate at the Hororata meeting, will race as Copenna. She is a promising maiden, and galloped well over five furlongs yesterday, in company with Miss Purau, by Tea Tray from Gazeworthy. Copenna is now trained by A. S. Ellis, and will race on the West Coast circuit. A Successful Dam. Charmilla, dam of Cassolette, Malmsley, Charmeuse, and Verden, has produced a filly foal to Nightmarch. A three-year-old filly by Rosenor from Charmilla is at present one of H. Nurse's active team at Riccarton. She is a dark chestnut with silver mane and tail, and in a few recent sprints has attracted notice by her free style of galloping. She is to race as Charmione, and is due to have her first race at Riccarton next week. Riding at Woodville. A. Eastwood" will be riding at the Woodville meeting to-morrow, his mounts comprising Spiral, Red Top, and Burnish. His holiday programme will embrace the Dunedin, Waikouaiti. and Southland meetings. In the West. At the Canning Park (Perth) meeting on November 25 the Flying Handicap, one mile, was v ~i by the New Zealand-bred Childstudy (Psychology —Paoanui). Childstudy started favourite, and won by a short head. Now a Veteran. Steve Donoghue celebrated his forty-ninth birthday on October 15. Donoghue headed the English winning list several seasons, and was not doing badly this year with 51 wins up to the middle of October. The figures of every jockey confirm Richards's superiority. When a jockey over a long period scores about three and a half wins to the one of the man nearest him, there can be only one reason.

In Two Cups. Eight Auckland Cup candidates are also in the Manawatu Cup, decided on the same day. The list is: Brambletorn, All Humbug, Alloy, Desert Star, Esteem, Fairway, Forestry, and Gold Trail. Similarly there are six sprinters doubly engaged, those who are in both the Railway Handicap and the Manawatu sprints being Autopay, Cadland, British Columbia, Diatomous, Boughal, and Passion Fruit. All Supreme is also engaged at both fixtures.

Reminders. Nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club's summer meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Monday, which hour is also the time of final forfeits for the New Zealand Champion Stakes, to be decided on Boxing Day. Nominations for the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting close to-day, when a payment for the Great Northern Derby'also falls due. Nominations for the Wmton Tro - ting Club's annual meeting close to for the Greyl " o " t !i l a " nd Oamaru meetings close on Monday Acceptances for two trotting events at the Hororata meeting close on Monday. Sign of the Times. The Forbury Park Trotting Club has decided to give £3OOO m stakes for its summer meeting, and this repie sents an increase of £SOO on the corresponding fixture' last year. Wellington: T.C. For the Summer Handicap, 4nun 28scc class, two miles, to be run at the 'Wellington meeting on January 13, a slake of 'IOO sovs isj on Other events include the Hutt dieap, of 250 sovs, two miles, 4mm 34sc'a class, and the Dispati.h Handicap, of 200 sovs, 2min 44sec class, a mile and a quarter. Nominations close on January 3. Nominations Extended. At the request of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders' Association, the Ashburton Trotting Club has decided to extend the date of closing of nomillations until Monday next at 5 p.m. Final forfeits for the Champion Stakes are also extended to the same da^e.

Small, Rut Select. Although only eight horses were accepted for in the Mace Memorial Handicap, to be run at New Bnghton to-morrow, this race should prove a most cxcilitig one, and backers will have some difficulty in selecting a favourite. The majority, have shown distinctly good form during the last few months, and each looked capable of still better things. Giro, now a five-year-old, with Derby honours to his credit, seems to be returning to form that earned him success as a three-vear-old. and in the Visitors' Handicap, at Mcthven, in October. he registered a very attractive performance by beating a strong field over a mile and a quarter, in 2min 47 4-ssec, and a pleasing feature was his strong finishing run. He has not won a race since, but in running third to Raydus and Manoeuvre in the November Handicap at Addington last month he registered 4min 25sec for two miles, and he was very close up at the finish. A repetition of this form should find him disputing matters at the finish. Like the majority of Wrack pacers, he is improving with age. Manoeuvre's Consistency. A most genuine pacer is the Man o' War mare Manoeuvre, and though in her earlier racing she showed a preference for the shorter distance events, she has proved the possession of stamina in her races over two miles, and this might only be expected from one of her breeding. At the New Brighton meeting in September she won the Wainoni Handicap of a mile and a quarter in 2min 47 2-ssce, beating a big field, and in her next appearance on the track she was a close second to Checkers in the Beach Handicap, in 2min 45 1-iisec. but a much more impressive trial for such a race as she is engaged in on Saturday was when she ran Raydus to a neck in the November Handicap nl Addington. registering 4min 25 4-sse<\ Tn this race she showed the possession of rare stamina Mid a •loix'-niinnlion at the finish that oromisos well. At the recent Forbury T'ark Manoeuvre won the Recovery Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, in 2min 44 l-ssec. defeating a really c;ond field, and her position as one of the favourites for to-mor-row's rnr" appears to be justified. A Two Milei. Another pacer thai i.s fast developing for higher honours is Gay Gordon, who, last season a more than useful mile saddle horse, has of late shown himself quite capable of seeing out a solidly run two miles. At Addington in August he won the Trial Handicap on a heavy track in 4min 39 3-5 sec, and was third to Blue Mountain and Indianapolis in the Heathcote Handicap in 4min 26 4-ssec, while in the Methven Cup he was third to Taxpayer and Holly Bank in 4min 24 2-ssec. lie also won the mile saddle on the third day of the last meeting at Addington in 2min 14 4-ssec, and he seems equally at home in the sprints or racing over a journey. Gay Gordon has all the qualifications of a stayer and is bound to be well supported in to-morrow's race. The Northern Classic. A further payment is due to-day for the Great Northern Derby, and as only 10 three-year-olds are engaged, it cannot be said that the race promises to provide a very exciting contest. The outstanding performer to date is Chancellor, who looks to hold the same prospects of success as War Buoy did in the New Zealand Derby. As a two-year-old Chancellor won three races before finishing third to War Buoy and Village Guy in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and this season in three starts he has won twice, once over a mile and a half <n 3min 21 2-ssec, and again over a iiiiie and a quarter in 2min 49 l-ssec, uoiix useful performances for a Derby candidate. These efforts overshadow those of the others engaged in the race, although Great Chum by Nelson Bingen —Harvest Home won the Improvers' Handicap at Auckland in October in 2min 52 2-ssec, and Blandford by Worthy Bond—Fancy Pointer ran a close third to Lord Wrack and Attralette at Wellington. Others engaged include Rare Rey by Rey de Oro — Royal Empress, Roma Girl by Author Dillon—Lady Bee. Silver Bullet by Metal—Bequest, Ringtrue by Travis Axworthy—Bertha Bell, Kewpie's King by Blue Mountain King—Kewpie, a filly by Great Bingen—Slapfast, and a filly by Jack Potts—Pedro Pronto mare Master Hoy. Master Roy showed promising form at the Addington August meeting when he won the Canterbury Handicap of two miles in 4min 30 3-ssec, but this is tlie sole performance for the present season that will justify him carrying much support to-morrow. Master Roy it is generally thought is capable of better things than he has yet shown, and it i.s only a question of his coming right to justify the confidence reposed in him. A Generous Bookmaker. Soon after Ascot, a Melbourne track, was opened for trotting, and to give the game a fillip, Mr C. Johnston, a well-known bookmaker, promised £lO to the owner of the horse recording 2min lUsec. This sum was collected recently by W. McKay, owner-driver of Auburn Lad, who registered 2min 9?sec. 1 Mr Johnson has offered another £lO to the owner of the horse that breaks the existing record.

Trotting in Adelaide. Trotting has never become firmly established in South Australia, and one o£ the reasons is the lack of betting facilities. Keen workers in the interest of the sport have had a long battle to have this state of affairs altered, and it seems they are at last to be rewarded for their efforts, for recently a bill to provide for the licensing of bookmakers was passed by the assembly. Amendments to the original proposal will allow bookmakers to operate alongside the totalisator on racecourses, and on registered premises off racecourses throughout the state. In the metropolitan area bookmakers will be allowed to operate in their offices while a race meeting is in progress, but in the country, if the meeting is within

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders' Association was held on Wednesday night, Mr T. G. Fox presiding over a full attendance. Two new members, Messrs R. Dunlop and A. Williamson, were elected. A further discussion about the Timaru trotting track took place. It was resolved to send a delegate to meet the Timaru Club's committee and go fully into points raised in a previous letter to the club. It was decided to protest against any form of handicapping which included "temporary," penalties, but to congratulate the handicapping committee on recent amendments instituted. The secretary was instructed to write to the New Brighton Trotting Club and the Hororata Racing Club about large fields in their slow class races, and to suggest that these races should be run in two divisions, as it was impossible to start more than 30 horses off the same mark. The pooling of all belting on one machine was considered an improvement on the win and place system, and members expressed appreciation of the action of those clubs endeavouring to improve the betting system. The further reduction in stakes by the Canterbury Park Trotting Club was unfavourably received, especially since some country clubs now provided higher stakes than this club. Train arrangements for the Westport Trotting Club's meeting on December 26 and 27 were approved. A special general meeting of members called to amend the rules of the association was held after the meeting and several amendments recommended by a sub-committee were adopted, the chief of which increased the membership of the management committee from 10 to 15. 10 miles of their office, they will have to cease business in the office at 1 p.m. on the day of the race meeting. Bookmakers will be permitted to operate at trotting meetings, but a proposal to allow the totalisator at trotting meetings was rejected. It is expected that the measure will also be passed by the Legislative Council. Trotting owners will indeed be pleased if the measure becomes law, as although they have the benelit of night racing in Adelaide, neither bookmakers nor the totalisator form of betting were allowed. Those breeders who luckilv kept going may now derive some benefit in the near future.
