STEWART'S GULLY RETICULATION

POWER LICENSE HANDED OVER Steps are to be taken by the Waimairi County Council to hand over a license to supply electrical power in the Stewart's Gully district to the North Canterbury Power Board, according to a motion passed at a meeting last night of the council. The chairman (Cr. J. Liggins) reported on behalf of a sub-committee that had considered the electrical reticulation of Stewart's Gully. The committee had gone into the matter thoroughly, and had decided that the county clerk should get a list of names and addresses of section holders at Stewart's Gully and circularise them about costs and guarantees. The committee would consider the matter again when replies were received. Cr. W. P. Spencer then expressed the opinion that the whole area should be handed over to the North Canterbury Power Board. He recommended that the area should be handed over unconditionally. Seasons For Change. Cr. C. E. Cross said that if the council proceeded with the reticulation, the money would have to be taken out of capital. There was not much received from persons who had week-end residences, and there was little prospect of any big works going up in the area. If power was given to Stewart's Gully then the council would be unable to give the people in other localities any reduction in electricity charges. He was in favour of, handing the area over to the board. "I do not agree," said Cr. T* O. Newnham. "I do not like the idea of handing over the council's responsibilities to another body. Surely we could make the service pay." It was then moved by Cr. W. G. Chapman that the council take the necessary steps to hand over the license to supply electrical power in the Stewart's Gully area (to- be defined), to the North Canterbury Power Board. Seconding the motion, Cr. Spencer said that he had always wanted electricity at Stewart's Gully, and he had known that the only way to get it was to hand the matter over to the power board. The motion was carried unanimously.
