ROWING

EIGHT-OAR BOAT EAST COAST ASSOCIATION'S REQUEST A proposal to purchase an eight-oar boat for the East Coast Rowing Association led to a considerable amount of discussion at the meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Association last evening, members finally agreeing' to support the proposal subject to certain conditions. In the absence of the president, Mr D. Lee (vice-president.) presided over an attendance of Messrs W. H. Evans, E. Velvin, A. T. Evans. J. B. Taylor. F. H. Brown, C. H. Clayton. R. C. Neville, W. G. Atack, W. L. Whittington. G. H. Hobbs, F. L. Booth, and R. J. Hobbs (secretary). The secretary of the East Coast Rowing Association wrote asking for the support of the Canterbury Association for the purchase of an eight-oar boat for the East Coast. The East Coast Association had been reformed three years ago, and was the only association in New Zealand without an eight-oar boat. An application for one had been made to the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, and had been favourably received, the association having passed a resolution authorising the purchase of a boat out of funds if local associations were in favour of such a course. Mr Atack said that he was not in favour of using the funds on deposit. If they set a precedent by granting the request made there would be applications from clubs with worn-out boats, and they would be hard to refuse. Other members expressed the opinion that the East Coast Association would have received a boat if it had been reformed when the fund was established, and consequently it was entitled to a boat out of the fund. After further discussion, it wa? agreed that the resolution to secure a boat for the East Coast Association should be supported, and Mr Velvin moved that the association support the purchase of the boat as soon as the exchange rate was reduced, provided that any amount taken from the capital fund should be repaid by yearly instalments of one-half of the interest received from the deposit fund. The motion was carried. Akarca Regatta. The programme for the Akaroa regatta, which is to be held on New Year's Day. was approved, subject to minor alterations. The rules for the regatta stated that the finishing line should be between two flags, but it was agreed that the crews should not be required to finish between the flags, but on a line defined by them. The secretary of the Otaso annual regatta wrote advising that the regatta would celebrate its seventy-second anniversary on February 3, 1934, and extended an invitation to crews under the control of the Canterbury Association to compete.
