Difficulties in disposing of beef held in the Dominion under the quota system imposed by Great Britain last year were referred to by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, in a letter to the Poverty Bay Sheep Owners' Union. At present there are about 18,000 quarters of last season's beef still in store in Gisborne, and with the recommencement of killing operations, the federation was anxious to ascertain the prospects of clearing the accumulation. The board, in its letter, expressed its hostility to the principle of quotas, but explained that the situation existing in England last season made it clear that nothing but harm could result from sending more supplies forward. For this reason it had been agreed to spread the shipments during the flush period, and under this arrangement it was proposed that stocks held in Gisborne and other centres should be sent forward. It was expected that the last of the Gisborne surplus would be cleared by the end of January. ,A clock with faces 60ft in diameter has just been erected in Paris, on the Eiffel Tower. It has no hands. Instead, the dials are fitted with rows of electric lamps arranged along radii drawn from the centre to the circumference at the position of every live minutes. Thus at five minutes past nine a row of lamps from the centre of the clock to the figure one would represent the long hand, and another row from the centre to the figure nine would represent the hour hand, thus indicating the time. The dials are formed of enormous circles of green and red lights. With new arrangements shortly to be introduced the seconds will be indicated as well as the hours and minutes.
