MEETING OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS The montlily meeting of the Young Men's Christian Association Board of Directors was held last evening there being present: Messrs D. E. Parton (in the chair), K. G. Archer, W. F. Blackwell, J. E. Fleming, J. W. Hillary, S. L. Partridge, J. I. Royds, I Sladen, A. M. West, and A- J. McEldowney (general secretary). A motion of sympathy with Mr A. T. Watson, chairman of the residents* committee, on the death of his sister, was passed. It was decided to set up a special camp committee this year, in order to give further publicity to the boys' camp. Several directors expressed the opinion that fully 100 more boys could be taken into camp during the holiday season, and that the claim of the camp, at Wainui as a really healthy holiday; should be brought before the public. Messrs F. H. Sandall, Irving Sladen, J. E. Fleming, and J. W. Hillary were appointed members of the camp committee. Concerning the physical department report, great appreciation was expressed of the splendid work done by the leaders' corps during the year, and it was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Messrs E. Anderson and G. Graham, for their long and efficient services in the leaders' corps. Officers' Reports. The following is a summary of the reports presented to the board:— The general secretary reported that the last month's work had been intensified in all departments, owing to the Queen Carnival, but that the ordinary work had gone on in undiminished acThe Bible Study groups had kept up well, but most of them would be finishing for the season shortly, with the exception of the boys' department. The residents' service had been taken by various speakers, who had been appreciated. Several services had been taken by members and stall, while the latter had been in much demand for rallies, etc. The winter season educational classes had finished with a good attendance at all groups. The optimists' club meetings had been good right throughout the month. As usual at this time of the year the number of residents in the dormitory had dcereased, there being at the present time 26 permanents and 3 transient residents. The vocational guidance work naa been carried on to the same intensity. the staff of the vocational guidance bureau being kept working at high pressure. Special committees dealing with the visitation of schools, would be set up shortly. This visitation would take place directly after the proficiency examinations.

Boys' Department. The boys' department report, presented by Mr D. W. Ross, boys' work director, showed that the attendances ,at club activities had kept up remarkably well, so satisfactorily that towards the end of September there was almost a record attendance for the suburban primary night. The secondary schools groups held a combined rally when the address was given by Mr victor French. Combined rallies were held in the primary section, when Mr Ray Adair gave the talk. Two semi-final debates were held in the secondary groups. Many boys were becoming interested in the camp and several had made small deposits towards their fees The boys' division staff spent two'days at Wainui during the second week of September, repairing equipment, and levelling parts of the ground. A family moving picture night was held during the mpnth, with an attendance of 150. The boxing class continued, with an average attendance of 25 each week. The mouth-organ band continued to do well. The world brotherhood and stamp club had developed into a very live activity, ana a number of letters had been received by the boys from various countries. The physical education department report, presented by Mr H. W. Heslop, chairman of the cabinet, and Mr C. G. Pegg, physical director, stated that attendances had kept up splendidly during the period September 4 to 30. The total attendance for the period was 3285, as against 2974 for the same period last year. The general consensus of opinion regarding the display was that it was certainly the best yet held, and reflected great credit on all those who took part—Messrs K. A. Muff, C. F. Ebert, N. McCracken, W. Robbins, and G. A. Skelton, the reserves being Messrs W. Taylor and G. Graham.

THE GYMNASIUM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Dominion gymnasium championships in connexion with the Young Men's Christian Association will be held at Trentham military camp during Labour Day week-end. Competitors would take part from Hamilton, Nelson, Wellington, and Christchurch Associations, and it is expected that there will be keen competition among the various leaders. The Christchurch team will leave on Friday evening.

Y.M.C.A. QUEEN CARNIVAL

All arrangements for the "Eack-to-childhood" party to be held in the Caledonian Hall on Thursday, October 26, in aid of all the queen candidates have been completed, and the function promises to be a great success. There have been many enquiries during the last two days for tickets, and it is expected that before the function commences there will be an assurance of a full house. Many special competitions and novelty items should attract. Every care has been taken to run the programme on a high plane and at the same time to provide a great variety of entertainment for all who come.

COMMERCE QUEEN The commerce queen committee is steadily preparing for its many activities which will be held next week. The first will be a bridge and 500 evening in the D.I.C. on Wednesday, October 25, for which tables may be reserved at the D.I.C. On Saturday evening, October 28, the Young Men's Christian Association headquarters will be transformed into a "fun fair," and it is hoped that the commerce queen supporters will flock in their hundreds to have a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The committee organising this activity has arranged for stalls, short programmes of entertainment, and many side-shows, which will be in the charge of the Commercial Travellers' Association.

OPTIMISTS' QUEEN

Concerning the Optimists' queen candidate, it was reported at the committee meeting last evening that several country concerts were being arranged by which means it was expected to raise a considerable sum of money for their queen. It was reported that the booking of tables for the bridge and 10 evening to be held in the Merivale Parish Hall on Tuesday, October 24, was somewhat slow, and arrangements were made to try to sitmulate interest in the event
