CHRISTMAS ANNUALS

"N.Z. FREE LANCE" An impression that New Zealand is a land of many and amazing contrasts is given by the pictures which compose the "New Zealand Free Lance Annual" for 1933. Photographs of cities and gardens and farms emphasise the comfort and luxury of New Zealand life, and then there are magnificent impressions of beautiful and often overpowering landscapes. The high standard which the annual always reaches is maintained this year, ft shows those who turn its pages almost every one of the famous sporting and scenic attractions of the North and South Islands, and gives a faithful picture of the everyday life of New Zealanders, both ' Maori and pakeha. Outstanding among many beautiful camera studies is one of shags, described as "our pirate fishermen,'' perched on a pohutukawa tree at Little Barrier Island, and two giant kauris in the far north. There are four striking pictures in colour, one of the rose section of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

"AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS"

With a fully-coloured cover of a kingfisher in flight, this season's issue of the Christmas number of the "Auckland Weekly News" fully maintains the high standard achieved by its predecessors. This year Ihe South Island has a much larger section devoted to it than usual and the views of its worldfamed scenery are well reproduced. The pictures of the North Island mainly deal with yachting and seaside recreation, while th6se of the South show the towering snow and bushclad slopes of the ranges, the quiet expanse of the lakes, and pastoral scenes on the plains. Articles include-, in the issue are two short stories and a review of New Zealand's native flowers, some of which are reproduced in three-colour on a presentation plate. Another coloured supplement is a view of the famous Wanganui river taken in its upper reaches.
