NEW STATE FIRE OFFICE
CLEANING OF SITE COMMENCED The first stages of (he work lo be undertaken in the erection of the new State Fire Insurance Office, in Worcester street, were commenced yesterday when the demolition of the building at present on the site was commenced. Large holes are now apparent in the brick walls on Hereford place but until the contractors, Messrs B. Moore and Sons, Ltd., obtain possession of the front part of the building at the beginning of November, not much will be seen. It is expected that the site will be clear in a fortnight after that and then will commence the excavation for the foundations. The cellar so formed will be 14 feet deep and the foundations will be of the floating raft type on huge concrete beams. The cellar will cover the whole site and the actual building will probably begin to take shape about the beginning of the year. Between 50 and GO men will be directly employed on the job, but this number will be exceeded at various limes during the construction when upwards of 100 will be engaged. In addition work will be provided for as many more joiners and other tradesmen.
