NORTH CANTERBURY

RANGIORA The Church Army mission services conducted by Captains Banyard and Beck and Sister North, at Rangiora. concluded on Sunday. There were good congregations both in the morning and in the evening. At a men's service at St. John's Church in the afternoon Captain Banyard gave an address on his work as a missionary in the English prisons. The Rangiora Brass Band, under Mr H. T. Oates, played a selection and the music for the hymns.

HANMEK SPRINGS The Canterbury Volunteer Fire Brigades Association will hold its annual demonstration at Hanrner Springs on Labour Day. The visitors will arrive on Saturday, and will be j the guests of the local brigade at a social anci supper in th- evening. On Sunday morning the Woolston Band will arrive and will lea.d a church parade to the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. F. 11. Bailey will officiate. In the afternoon the band will give a concert in the hospital grounds. On Monday morning the competitions will be held on the domain, and in the evening a ball will be held in the Hanmer hall.

CLARENCE BRIDGE The fortnightly meeting of the Workers' Educational Association was held in the schoolroom recently. The play read was "Hobson's Choice." a comedy in four acts. A dance was held in the school in aid of the school funds. Music was supplied by Mrs G. Dagg. Extras were played by "Mrs L. Pugh and Miss E. Garrett. Mr S. Goodwin was master of ceremonies.

KAIKOL'RA The annual meeting of the Kaikoura Collie Dog Club was held on Saturday afternoon, Mr G. E. T. Shand (president) presiding over a large attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr P. Adair in his illness. The secretary (Mr C. Keehan) submitted the balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £2(5 14s Bd. The sum of £5 5s was voted to Mr Keehan in appreciation of his services. Miniature cups were presented to Messrs A. Giles (3>. E. Rutherford, B. Stalker, and C. Stringfellow. Bowling: Stoddart took two for 30, Macfarlanc two for 42, Grant one for 10, and Stewart two for 20. Next Saturday the match will be married men v. single men. On Monday next the Marlborough XI. will visit Kaikoura.

At a meeting of settlers of the Kai-koura-Waiau road it was decided to forward a petition to the Amuri County Council protesting against the regulations governing transport on the Walesback road.

A meeting of the general committee of the Kaikoura centre of the New Zealand Legion took place at the Public Library on Saturday night, Mr F. J. Monk presiding over a fair attendance. It was decided to approve the Stamped Scrip Plan as a palliativemeasure for assisting relief workers, with slight modification. Miss G. Rowland (Christchureh) and Miss M. Lanyon (Kaikoura) made an ascent of Mount Fyffe recently. It is stated that they are the first women to reach the summit without being accompanied by a guide. A very successful dance was held in the Oddfellows' Hall under the supervision of the Kaikoura fishermen. Music was supplied by Mr W. Thomas, extras being played by Misses D. Pluck, Roi Martin, M. Strahl. Messrs T. Norton (piano) and S. Cormack (banjo). Mr D. Roberts was the master of ceremonies. The waltzing competition was won by Miss M. Strahl and Mr S. Ellis, the statue waltz by Miss N. Pluck and Mr D. Sullivan, and the Monte Carlo by Mrs D. Low and Mr S. Ellis. A vocal item w.tcontributed by Mr J. Russell, and an Irish jig by Miss N. Pluck. Sunday was observed as Young People's Day at St. Paul's Church, and a special order of service was followed. At the children's service in the morning Miss Alma Harris sang a solo, and at the evening service the following Bible Class members took readings, etc: Misses V. Johnston, M. Strahl, L. Williams, and Mr W. D. Sabiston. At both services Mr E. W. Flower conducted the singing, and the following instrumentalists assisted: Messrs E. W. Harris, W. A. Nelson, H. Brown. W. D. Sabiston, Masters H. Stewart. I. Strahl, and A. Strahl, and the Rev. F. Robertson. A successful dance was held in the Hapuku Hall under the supervision of the hall committee. Music was supplied by Mr W. Thomas and Miss E. Milligan. Mr H. Yaxley was master of ceremonies.

A dai«ce was held in the Suburban Hall in aid of the garden party to be held on November 25 by members of the Catholic Church. Music was supplied by Misses M. and E. Wareham. Mrs L. Chapman (violin). Mrs F. Smith, and Misses Mary Mackle and K. Smith. Mr S. Sharpe was the master of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo wait/ was won by Miss M. Wareham and Mr J. Chisnall. One of the most important proposals yet put before the ratepayers of Kaikoura will be discussed at a meeting in the Public Library on Friday evening, when the county chairman (Mr F. J. Monk) will report on the proposed wafer supply for the Kaikoura township.

j OXFORD { In view of the torrential ram that fell during the evening and the cold conditions, the attendance at the Town Hall on Sunday evening for the singing of the sacred cantata, "Calvary" was a good one. A body of singers from the choirs of the Malvern district sang the cantata. The performance was preceded by a short programme by the Oxford Brass Band. The services for the anniversary of the Oxford Methodist Church were held on Sunday, when there were large attendances both morning and evening. The Rev. A. AMBERLEY A meeting of the committee of the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held recently, Mr L. 11. Gardiner presiding. The secretary was instructed to write to the relatives of the late Mr J. D. Wyllie expressing the association's sympathy. It was decided 1o write tu the Department of Agriculture requesting the attendance of a veterinary surgeon on the day of

the show. Accounts amounting to 10s were passed for payment. It was decided not to restrict the number of icecream vendors, but to charge a ground rental. Mr D. Coleman was elected a member of the association. The president was authorised to engage the services of the North Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band for show day. It was decided that a permanent loading hank for the use of exhibitors be erected and that Mr J. B. Starky interview the Domain Board on the matter. The secretary was instructed to write to the local branch of the .Returned Soliders' Association asking it to submit, names of some of their unemployed members who could be employed .'is gatekeepers on show clay. The official opening of the tennis season in Amberley took place on Saturday afternoon, the weather conditions being ideal. The president (Mr A. A. Holland! referred to the death of Mr F. P. Coleman, who had held the office of president of the club for nine years, and who had always been a keen and enthusiastic worker in club matters since its inception. He wished members a very successful season. Offers ol" trophies for junior players for competition during the season had been made by Mrs Holland and Mrs J. Sehofield. During the afternoon a yankee tournament was held, the winners in each grade becoming the holders of the Harris ferns and Holland rackets. The winners were: Seniors, Miss K. Hallinan and W. Rhodes; juniors, Miss M. Ford and Thos. Kidd. As a conclusion to the opening day, a very successful dance was held in the Masonic Hall, and opportunity was taken to decide a competition for a clock presented by Mrs G. W. Rhodes, the winner being Mrs Hilmer, who gave it back to the club to be auctioned. The president presented trophies won during the afternoon. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs G. McMillan and Leo Croft, and music was supplied by the Kit Cat Orchestra. Extras were played by Miss B. Kennedy.

DARFIEU) The monthly meeting of the Darfield branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the lounge of the Memorial Hail. Mrs G. C. Wan-en presided over a large attendance. Mr.i Spenee-Clark, of Christchureh, gave an interesting talk on drama, and advice on forming a drama circle. This was followed by an excellent play-reading. Beaman and family in their recent bereavement. Mr Bcaman was a member of th; board during the last 14 years. After an inspection of the grounds, it. was decided to have the fences repaired, and the grounds improved.

LITTLE RIVER Recently at the home of Mrs T. Thompson, Little River, the Girls' Friendly Society held a successful "bring and buy" afternoon, the object being to provide clothes for a child in the orphanage. Croquet was played, and several competitions were held. Tea was served on the lawn. Mis« G. Joblin (Wellington) has been tin* guest of Mr and Mrs V. Joblin (Western Valley, Little River). On Saturday afternoon in ideal weather, the Little River Cricket Club held its opening. There was a large attendance of members and friends. Afternoon tea was served by Ihe v. omen of the club.

OURUHIA Mr H. MacMillan presided at the annual meeting of the Ouruhia Social Committee. The secretary reported that the profits from the socials held during the wintr amounted to £9 3s sd. SPRINGSTON At the quarterly meeting ol the Springston Methodist circuit, held in the Weedons Church, the Rev. C. Eaton, chairman of the district, presided. Associated with him was the Rev. K. L. Blamires, who is acting as minister during the illness of the Rev. J. Southern. The balance-sheet showed an improved position. The Sunday schools were reported to be in a sound condition. The foreign mission effort would be finished by the end of November. Special anniversary collections were granted to Springston, Ellesmere. Weedons, and Templeton for the coming quarter. Supply for next year met with a fair discussion. It was decided to leave the ministerial supply for next year to next Methodist conference.

The annual sale of work arranged by members of the Hororata Presbyterian Church Ladies' Sewing Guild was held in the Hororata Public Hall on Saturday afternoon. There was a fairly large attendance, and the stalls were well patronised. The stalls and stallholders were: Ice-cream and sweets, Miss Quartermain and Mrs Gibson; bran tub. Mesdames Yeates and G. Pearce: flowers, Mesdames E. and B. Clueas: work stall, Mesdames R. Murray, T. F. Hight, and Miss Nelson; produce stall, Mrs T. E. Pearson and Miss Milne; refreshments, Mrs W. A. ISLINGTON A meeting of the committee of the Indies' croquet club was held at Islington. Mrs F. A. McTeigue presided over a fair attendance. It was decided to affiliate with the Canterbury Croquet Association this year. The building of the club's pavilion has been held over pending the probable erection of a central pavilion on the Hornby recreation ground. A trophy has been presented by Mr K. Pearce for competition amongst members. It was decided to have open Held days and that a small charge be made for non-members of the e'.ib for the use of the club's equipment. A cricket match between the Hornby Old-Timers' Club and the Hornby third grade am was held at the Islington Domain on Saturday afternoon. The game resulted in a win for the I Old-Timers by 93 runs to 62.

HORN] J Y A smoke concert and presentation were held in the Islington Hall recently, when work-mates and friends of Mr A. Monteith met to bid him farewell on the occasion of his transfer to Imlay. where he will take up duties shortly as foreman freezer. The chairman (Mr Morgan Evans) referred lo the death of Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., and a motion of sympathy with the relatives was passed. In making the presentation of a travelling rug, Mr Evans congratulate* Mr Monteith on his promotion, and referred to the happy relationship thai had always existed between him and his fellowworkers. The principal toasts honoured during the evening were: "Mr and Mrs Monleith." proposed by Mr V. Parker; "The New Zealand Refrigerating Company," proposed by Mr MeTeigue; and "The Ladies." by Mr MeGuinness. Items were given by the following:—Songs, Messrs Rishworth, Edwards, Blakemore, and Windle; recitations, Messrs Spicer, McGlinehy, and Hoycard; violin solo, Mr J. McBride. Mr J. SOUTH MALVERN The Coalgat.c Tennis Club commenced the tennis season on Saturday by entertaining members of the Glentunnel Tennis Club at the courts in the Coalgate Domain. The president's wife (Mrs J. A. McCaughan), after wishing the club every success during the season, declared the courts open. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. L. A. Marshall, on behalf of the visitors, manked the members of the club for its hospitality. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr J. H. Pearson, who had always taken a keen interest in the club's welfare. Mr and Mrs R. StelTenson (Timaru) have returned home after visiting relatives in WhiteelifTs.

Bathie (Sydnev), who have been visiting relatives in Whitecliffs and Coalgate, will return home this week. y TEMPLETON A large attendance was present at the fortnightly meeting of the Templeton Oddfellows' Lodge. Bro. K. Boyle presided. Three brothers were reported to be on the sick list, and sick pay amounting to £5 6s 8d was passed for payment. The election of officers resulted:—N.G., Bro. H. Wright; V.G., Bro. J. Duthie; secretary, Bro. J. Carter; treasurer, Bro. J. Richardson. Bro. L. Steel and staff installed the officers. It. was resolved that during the period of daylight saving the meeting would commence at 8 p.m. The lodge representatives reported that they had attended the public installation and social at the Star of Linwood Lodge, and also the Prebbleton Oddfellows' ball. A meeting of ti -' Tcmpleton Domain Committee was held in the library recently. Mr D. Mackie presided. Record was made in the minutes of the work done by the late Mr G. P. Kissel for the domain. The work of the men working on the No. 5 scheme in clearing and improving the domain was favourably commented on, and it was decided to utilise the labour in making other improvements, including t.no building of a sand-pit for children, the erection of tool-shed, and general maintenance work, llr D. Mackie was elected chairman of the committee in place of the late Mr G. P. Kissel. Messrs R. Johnston and H. B. Kissel were elected to fill vacancies on the committee.
