OFFENDING CYCLISTS

COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE That many cyclists persisted in riding at night without a light, in spite of repeated warnings and a recent increase in the fine imposed on offenders, was mentioned by Mr E. D. Mosley. S.M., when dealing with bylaw cases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. "I notice that the increase in the ratio of the fines does not seem to have had any effect," said Mr Mosley. "I was motoring on Saturday night, and noticed five cvclists without lights." "I see quite a few myself," said Mr H. Macintosh, the chief traffic inspector. There were about 40,000 cyclists in Christchurch, Mr Mosley said, and he supposed that it was hard to catch all offenders. It could be expected that there would be some offenders. Thirty or 40 cyclists came before the court every Friday. It certainly added considerably to the revenue, but he would like to see the offences stopping. "We have between £BOO and £9OO a year in fines from them," said Mr Macintosh. The inspector suggested that cyclists did nr' read the results of court prosecutions in the newspapers. "I hope not," laughingly replied Mr Mosley.
