FRIENDSHIP FOR FORMER CONQUEROR
FRENCH VILLAGE INCIDENT PARIS, October .13. In these days of estrangement between France and Germany a pleasing incident is reported from the village of Escautpoint, near Valenciennes, which the Germans occupied in the var. They were commanded by an officer who showed many kindnesses to the inhabitants and afterward married a French woman and settled in the village. The villagers are now indignant at the officer's sentence of 15 days' imprisonment for alleged assault, His wife is agitating for a reduction of the sentence and the villagers have arranged a banquet in h.is honour when he leaves gaol.
