At a meeting of the board of f directors of the Alliance Assurance Company, Ltd., held in London recently, Mr John •' H. Rhodes, o£ Messrs Rhodes, Ross, and Godby, was appointed a local director of the company in Christchurch. Colonel A. Orsborne, chief secretary in New Zealand for the Salvation Army, arrived from Wellington on Saturday morning, and left later for Timaru. Lieutenant-Colo- i nel F. Reese will leave Christchurch for Wellington to-morrow night on his way to Australia, where he will investigate conditions in the timber industry and see what can 1 be done to build up New Zealand's export trade in rimu, or red pine. Mr Reese will be accompanied by Mr J. W. Callwell, of Greymouth, and will leave Auckland in the Monowai on Friday. An intimation that for reasons purely private he was making his final abearance in public as a member "of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, of which organisation he is vice-president, was made by Mr J. Pearce Luke, of Wellington, at the annual dinner of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last week.

Mr James Aikman, who has been assistant bailiff in Christchurch for 29 years, will retire on superannuation in three months. He completed his duties on Saturday, having been granted three months' leave of absence, and was presented-with a travelling bag by members of the Magistrate's Court staff. The function took place in the room of Mr H. A. Young, S.M., Messrs E. V. Mosley, S.M., and H. P. Lawry, S.M., also being present. Mr Robert Parker, C.M.G., has concluded his fifty-fifth year as choirmaster and organist at ou Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Wellington, Canon Percival James paid a tribute to Mr Parker's service from the pulpit.
