SCHOOL COMMITTEES
OPAWA At the monthly meeting of the Opawa School Committee, Mr Chas. Hall was in the chair. Others present were C. .T. Pease. L. W. Ray, F II Scott V. Rlaklcy, J. V. Warren, L A. Jarden, F. H. DcphofT (secretary) and C. W. Allard (headmaster). The headmaster reported that the roll number was 424, with an average attendance of 402.3, a percentage attendance of 94.58. The inspectors had made their annual inspection. Dr. Eleanor Baker McLaglan had examined three classes, and found the health and general welfare of tbe children good. The fancy dress party had been a success in every way. It had been decided to ask the Education Board for a supply of outdoor seats, or sufficient timber to have them made. . The dental fees were being received satisfactorily, and should be sufficient to meet the liabilities for the year. Dental operations for the month totalled 327, including 195 patients who had been re-exammed, and lb new patients. It was decided to present two dux medals this year. Good reports were received for the "bring and buy" fair, to be held on October :iB. Gifts for competition were bcin? received freely. Physical displays and folk dancing by the pupils would be a feature. A tug of war contest would be held between leading Canterbury teams. In the evening an end of season dance would be held. A recent community ting had proved so popular that it had been decided to hold another on November 8. The school sports had taken place successfully. The tree-planting scheme for the school ground was deferred until next season. The treasurer's report showed accounts to be in -i satisfactory position.
SHIRLEY The monthly meeting of the Shirley School Committee was held recently, those present being Mr S. J. Geary (chairman), Mesdames McKay and Hartley, and Messrs Weir and Landery. The headmaster's report showed the school to be nourishing, and the grounds to be in splendid order. The roll number was 719, and the average attendance was well up to standard. Mrs Hartley, secretary of the combined St. Albans and Shirley Schools' dental clinic committee, announced that the committee would meet in the St. Albans Schocl to-night, Mrs Hartley, Messrs Geary ind Landcry being the Shirley School delegates on that commitlee. Mrs McKay and Mr Stanley were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
