NOTES ON THE PLAY WRIGHT'S SPLENDID FORM A WIN ON THE TWENTYFIFTH GREEN (f'goK O'.u bri:i:i.u. Coiiuesj'Ondckt.) AUCKLAND, October 15. The stage was well set to-day for ■what was expected to be a most thrilling final to the amateur golf championship. The weather was beautiful for golf when the players stepped on to the first tee. There was a dull sky, and the playing conditions were better than had been experienced during the tournament. The tire had been much reduced in the fairways and greens by overnight rain, and although heavy tain set in half-way through the morning round, the afternoon round ■was watched by the largest gallery that has yet followed the final of the amateur championship. 8. V. Wright, of the Balmacewan Club, Dunedin, inflicted a crushing dem on H. A. Black, of the Miramar Club, Wellington. Wright has been »garded as one of the best golfers in New Zealand for the last 10 years, and "though he ha 3 won numerous provincial titles, he has always failed to reproduce his best form at the national Meeting. In 1930 he was beaten by f- A. Black at Palmerston North in «a third round. In 1931 he was beaten « Christchurch at the last hole by UCaJlaghan, of Hawera, and last year t«K d J - L " BlaCk Sn h ' S beSt form l » be eliminated in the second round « Heretaunga. title an. 1930, he represented New Zealand in Sydney for the last KirkWindeyer Cup match. The two men are the very antithesis of each other in style and physique, adopting entirely dissimilar methods to ■ hieve similar results. Black, although taller and considerably the more powerful, brings far" more energy to bear on his drives. Wright's swing is more compact and by the way he outdrove Black yesterday, it was obvious that the power he got came from the lateral sway of his hips. P B ii ack >' ave his supporters an inkling of the disaster which was to follow £ ig i x.- at the ver y fh ' st hole - Wright fiad hit a glorious drive, which found the short edge of the green. Being short with his approach putt, h<* failed to sink his putt for a three, and Black, renowned for his green work, failed miserably with a two-footer to lose the hole. Black in Trouble. A sliced drive at the second saw Black in trouble, and Wright, being on the green in two, took the hole in tour to five. The third hole saw Black really unlucky, for after a good drive he played a beautiful niblick which pitched 10 feet short of the flag, only to kick high right through into teatree. Black, after endeavouring to play out, picked up and conceded the hole. Wright found the green at the short fuorth with his tee shot, but Black was too strong, and Wright took the hole in three to four to stand four up. .'it Die long fifth Black showed his one' and only dash of the match. Both Players had found the green with their third, and Wright putted dead for four, and Black was left with a 14-foot putt to stop the rout, which he duly sank to win his only hole. He had a chance of regaining another hole at the sixth, where Wright was bunkered, but failing to find the green with bis second had to be content with a half in five. The seventh hole was Wright's all the way. Black, taking two to recover from the green bunker, conceded the hole. Wright Eight Up. Halves in poor fives followed at Ihc eighth, but Wright sealed the way ic ■victory when he took the next three holes to stand eight up, Wright was now playing with great confidence,! and Black was always struggling for i halves. Wright played to the eighteenth hole with the commanding lead of; nine up. Black's second was bunkered, and Wright was far too strong and pitched right over the green, and j was lucky to stop in soft ground un- ! rier repair, which held his ball from out ot bounds. Dropping clear, j he proceeded to place a very difficult approach within inches of the hole, j lie went to luncheon witli the almost j incredible lead of 10 up. Heavy rain set in during the ncl-i ijoi'.mment, but this did not deter a gallery of more than 2000 from follow-! ,ng the players. The afternoon was! only a repetition of the morning.! Black failing to make any impression; on Wright, who went from one bril- j liant move to another, eventually tu find himself crowned champion on the I twenty-fifth green, by the most deci-; sive victory ever recorded in the ama- j ter championship final. It was bad j luck for Black to strike an off day | like this, but even if he had played his usual game he would not have j beaten Wright, who was almost un- j beatable on his day's play. ; j WOMEN'S TOURNEY j SECOND ROUND PLAYED j HOLDERS OF FOURSOME j TITLE DEFEATED \

Mrs Macfariane had an easy win against Miss Harkness, the match ending at the twelfth. Mrs Collinson showed excellent form in her match against Miss White-Parsons, and on her play today should be hard to beat for the title - Miss Gaisford was two down at the turn in her match with Miss Fleming, but won four in a row on the return. Miss Fleming took the sixteenth. The next was halved, Miss Gaisford winning the eighteenth and the gamp. Second round results were:— Miss Currie beat Mrs J. Findlay, 1 up. Miss Barns-Graham and the consistently good long game of Mrs Guy Williams resulted in the pair returning a really good card of 82, to win the championship foursomes, in which they were two strokes better than any other competitors, and six ahead of the holders, Miss O. Kay and Miss B. Gaisford. The winners were out in 39 one more than bogey, and came home in 43. Rain began to fall when they reached the fourteenth, and continued for the remainder of the journey, the last two holes being played in a real downpour. This is the second occasion on which Mrs Williams has had the honour of sharing the championship honours, for she was partnered with Miss S, Watson when she won the title at Herctaunga m 103 U. The litleholders were unaccountably right off their game, on the outward journey, taking 45, the seventh, eighth, and ninth seeing sixes recorded, with a four at the short tenth, end six at French Pass. RAWHITI LADIES' CLUB The final of the club championship and Bishop Cup, over 36 holes, was played during the week-end. The finalists were Mrs B. A. Miles, who won the event in the 1930 season, and Mrs W. Agar. Mrs Miles again secured the championship, 1 up. The contest was keen throughout, the morning round, which was played in ideal weather, leaving Mrs Miles 3 up. Mrs Miles did the 18 holes in 85, whilst Mrs Agar took 83. The difference was mainly due to the excellent putting of the former. In the afternoon, conditions were marred by heavy intermittent showers of hail and rain, which did not prevent Mrs Miles being 5 up at the twentieth, but Mrs Agar squared the match at the thirty-fourth. Mrs Miles won the next, and halved the home hole, where both players drove into the trees, Mrs Miles took 92 for the last 18 holes, and Mrs Agar 88.
