SHOP ASSISTANTS' AWARD
(l'.'iKSS ASSOCIATION' TEI.EGBA.At.) WELLINGTON, October 12? The employers' proposals for the new Shop Assistants' Award were the subject of Conciliation Council proceedings to-dav at Wellington. The Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants objected to the claims of
applicants, and submitted the existing award as counter-proposals.. Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., James Smith, Ltd., U Smith, Ltd., and the D.1.C., Wellington, were applicants. The proposals were generally lor a reduction of wages, but more particularly the wages of juniors. For the employers it was suggested that the starting age should be raised to 18, the tendency being for juniors to enter the trade at the latter age more than formerly.
