PRINCESS ELIZABETH

HER GRANDFATHER'S COMPANION (Received October 13, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 13. Lady Cynthia Asquith, in her book, The Married Life of the Duchess of York, mentions the wonderful companionship of Princess Elizabeth and her grandfather, the King. She also records that American dressmakers regard the Duchess as the prettiest Royal lady in Europe, and send representatives to study her dresses at important functions. Lady Asquith relates that the Queen, stooping over the cot in which Princess Elizabeth lay, once said: "I wish you were more like your dear little mother."

HOME ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION

Mr A. D. Brice, superintendent of school dental clinics in Canterbury, gave an instructive address on "Teeth and Health" at a meeting of the Home Economics Association, held in the Concert Hall of the Young Men's Christian Association building last night. Mr Brice emphasised the important part teeth play in the life of an individual from birth, and how if jaws are not given the necessary exercise and nourishment the teeth and ultimately the body suffers. The health of the teeth cannot be thought of apart from the health of the body, he said, for teeth arc nourished by the same food, attacked by the same enemies—and destroyed by the same agencies as the body. He stressed the importance of correct food for mothers and infants. If the teeth are not used to grind fibrous food, the lack of exercise at once becomes apparent in the size of the jaw, and the stimulus given by the chewing of tougher foods causes the jaw to grow, and become broad and well balanced, said Mr Brice. He drew diagrams of the various teeth and explained the reason of their particular shapes and their purposes.

Of the children entering the primer classes in the schools to-day, 95 per cent, had defective or decayed teeth. he said, and in practically every case not one tooth but many were defective. This showed that the children could not be digesting their food properly or the food had not been properly prepared. The constant flow of toxins into the child's blood stream from the decayed teeth stopped the normal development. It had been found that the food that provided most exercise Cor the jaws was generally the most nourishing. Many of the foods used in the present days satisfied the appetite, but allowed the bones, muscles, and teeth to starve.
