0 i GARDEN COMPETITION i The spring judging in the Papanui Beautifying Association's garden competition was held during the week. The judge, Mr W. J. Humm, was accompanied on the tour by Messrs E. Egglestoue and J. Sturrock. Commenting on the gardens, Mr Humm said a very high standard was set, and the winning garden was a credit to the owner and the community. Mr Humm also spoke favourably on the work of the association. The rose plot at the railway, he said, showed how an untidy corner could be transformed into a beautiful garden. He urged the association to oppose the ruthless lopping of trees, of which many cases were noted on the tour. The placings of the leading gardens were:— Mr F. Morgan, 68 St. Andrew's ter. race, 31 points. Mrs Foster, St. James avenue, 26 points. Mr Orchard, Rayburn avenue, 24 points. Mr Hamilton, Walford street, 23 points. Mr Borgfeldt, St. James' avenue, 23 points. Mr Coleman, Rayburn avenue, 22 points; 71 Paparoa street, 21 points. Mrs Hodie, Paparoa street, 20 points. Church Fair. The recent fair held by St. Paul's, St. James's, and St. Silas's Anglican Churches realised a gross profit of slightly more than £l5O. I Play at the Waimairi Tennis Club has started in earnest, and in a ladder match on Wednesday evening H. Tillman beat C. Rich for second place 9-7. He has now challenged F. Smith for first place. The team to play the first competition match to-day is:—F. Smith, H. Tillman, C. Rich, H. Ford, Misses Thomas, Logan, B. McNae, and Tullett. Miss McNae is a new member of the club and is Canterbury badminton champion. Cricket. The Papanui School Old Boys' Cricket Club opened its season on the school grounds. There was a large attendance. The president, Mr L. D. Grimwood, and the Rev. J. Farrar congratulated the club on its enterprise, and wished it success during the season. The first game in the competition will be played this afternoon at Linwood Park against Avon. The Harewood Girls' Club will open its season at St. James's Park this afternoon. Card Evening. J There was a large attendance at the weekly card evening of the Advance i Northcote Association. The winners were Mr and Mrs Shaskey. Temperance Union. The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Sunday School on Thursday afternoon. In the absence of the president Mrs Hopper presided. Arrangements were made to hold cradle roll day during the third week of next month, Mrs Carr to appoint the speaker to address the mothers. A very interesting report of the recent provincial convention held in Timaru was given by Mrs Lowrv. She spoke of

the splendid work being done by the Timaru union for the sailors'rest house there. A vote of thanks to the speaker was proposed by Mrs Elliott. The following resolutions were carried:—"That this meeting resolves to ask the Government that women police be appointed; that power should he given the magistrate to clear the court during the hearing of affiliation and divorce eases." On the recommendation of Mrs Lowry it was decided to consider the appointment of a superintendent of social and moral hygiene at the next annual meeting.
