FINES IMPOSED
QUEEN CARNIVAL LOTTERY (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGHAiO DUNEDIN, October 13. As a sequel to a queen carnival in which articles were raffled to raise funds, four chairmen of various committees appeared voluntarily in the Police Court to answer charges of establishing a lottery by which prizes were gained by a mode of chance. The magistrate indicated that he had every sympathy with the objects of the campaign to raise funds for the relief of distress, but that it would be improper for him not to enter a conviction. Three defendants were each fined 20s and the cost of conviction only was entered against the fourth, but on a charge of selling liquor at a dance he was fined a similar amount.
