BRITISH CARS FOR 1934
PRICES SLIGHTLY HIGHER BETTER SPECIFICATION There has been no increase in prices in. the British motor industry for a number of years and that which is now being shown in the new season's programmes is more apparent than real, says the latest bulletin of the British Commercial News Association, Ltd. That is to say, while prices may be a little higher, the addition is more than covered by the added specification of the cars. This is certainly so in the case of the 1934 Singers, which incorporate the pre-selectivc clutchless gearchange in" the case of. the de luxe models, while this eliminator of the gear-changing bogy may be had, at a slight extra charge, on all other cars in the range. The company carried out extensive experiments during this year with various forms of simplified gear-change, and the definite choice of the system now adopted was made some months ago. By means of the remote-control operating lever, any gear can be preselected at any time while the car is in motion, and, except from rest, without the use of the clutch pedal. The operation of changing gear consists merely of placing the gear lever into the desired position, accompanied by an casing of the accelerator pedal. When this latter is again depressed, Ifce car goes away smoothly in the preselected gear. By pulling out a control knob on the dashboard, the freewheel action can be converted to the usual clutch and gearbox arrangement. The successful engine suspension introduced last year, known as the vibro-damper, has been retained, as well as the type of steering. The models included in the 1934 range are the Singer Nine, Twelve, Fourteen, liLilre, 2-Litre, and Silent Six.
