HELPING HAND MISSION
TO 188 EDITOR Off TUB MESS. Sir,—A relief worker left his home on Wednesday morning, his wife and one girl being sick in bed, and the four other children getting ready for school. Ho came back that evening to find his home gone—gutted by fire to its foundations, and not a stick left standing. Fortunately there was no loss of life, but everything else, furniture, bedding, clothing, crockery, pots, and cutlery were completely demolished. Another relief worker with four children of his own is sheltering the family in the meantime, but it is a burden he cannot be expected to carry alone for long. The stricken family is known to me as a very deserving one. The little mother had recently papered the four rooms of their rented cottage with her own hands, while the father was laying down a lawn in front and cultivating the back garden. I am sure the citizens of Christchurch will help us to set up their home again. Everything is needed. The house burned so quickly that the mother was not even able to save a pair of shoes. Anyone willing to help can ring up 35-319, and we will collect their gifts to assist these good folk back to happiness. Both father and mother have seen war service.-—Yours, etc..
