WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

NORTH CANTERBURY AND WEST COAST FEDERATION A meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury and West Coast Federation of Women's Institutes was held at Christchurch yesterday, when there were present: Mesdames W. Deans (president, in the chair), B. L. Blunden, T. D. Mac Donald, Beattie, Meade, Ross, Macdonald, and Miss E. Jacobson. A letter was received from the Wanganui Federation thanking the Canterbury Federation for the excellent arrangements made for the entertainment of delegates at the recent Dominion conference in Christchurch. The Otago Federation also wrote thanking the Canterbury Federation for the pleasant time arranged for the delegates. Letters were received from the Dominion executive, asking that secretaries forward donations to the Dominion executive officials, Mesdames Kelso and Chisnall. The Red Cross Society wrote asking for a list of names of institute secretaries in the federation area, and it was decided to supply, the list. A number of remits for the coming half-yearly conference at G.reymoutn were read and considered. It was decided that the president (Mrs W. Deans), Mrs Beattie (honorary treasurer), and Miss E. Jacobson (acting-honorary secretary) attend the conference at Greymouth. Matters connected with the formation of the new West Coast Federation were discussed, and satisfactory arrangements made to adjust finances with the present North Canterbury and West Coast Federation. It was resolved to write to Mrs E. R. McCombs congratulating her upon being the first woman to be elected to the New Zealand. House of Representatives.

KAIKOURA

A meeting of the,Kaikoura Women's Institute was held in St. Paul's Schoolroom, Mrs A. B. Clark (president) presiding over a large attendance. A hearty welcome was extended to Mesdames W. Sabiston and P. Foster, following their illness, and to members of the Lynton Downs branch and Mrs Cormack (Moeraki). A letter of sympathy was requested to be sent to Mrs Shannon, expressing the hope that she would soon be restored to health. A playette, A Memory Powder," was given by members. Those taking part were: Mrs J. A. Johnston (Mrs Adams), Mrs; A. B. Clark (Mr Adams), Mrs E.H. Moiris (detective), Mrs V. y.right (the maid) Mrs E. Kemeys (the cook). The'winner of the roll-call was Mrs H A. Fairweather, Mrs T. Lane being second. The scone competition was won by Mrs A. W. Ball, Mrs Stewart b6 Aii interesting demonstration of silver paper work was given by M}l.s L. tea was provided by the hostesses, Mesdames J. Murray, W. Moir, W. F. Perrin, H. W. Ramey, and Miss J. Smith.
