. 4 _;.- CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION MEETING OF .COMMITTEE. With, the view of encouraging promising players in the Ashburton, South. Canterbury, and West Coast subassociations the committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association, at its meeting last night, decided to suggest a scheme to ; the sub-associations whereby players, chosen by the Canterbury selector, would come to Christchurch and play-in the Show Day matclu The scheme included the payment of some of the expenses of the players by the Canterbury Association. - The meeting was attended by* Messrs W. L. King (chairman), W. Simpson,- & S. Thompson, F. A. Jarrett, R. C. Burns, S. Wright, S. G. Lester, R. H. North, G. H. Robertson, C. H. Ayling, M. C. Ward, and E. E. Luttrell (honorary secretary). On the motion of .the chairman it was decided" to write to the Canterbury Rugby Union congratulating the union upon the successful conclusion of its season, artd on its retention of Rugby supremacy by Canterbury, against all challengers. Encouragement of Promising: Players. Mr Burns suggested that an endeavour should be made to encourage promising players in the minor associSouth Canterbury, and West Coast, and asked whether the meeting would be in favour of circularising the minor associations mentioned asking them to submit each year the names of promising players, together with their performances. On receipt of this information the; associations selector . would recommend whether all or any -of the players should be brewght to Christchurch to play in the Show Day match. It would be in the interests of cricket if the association financed the trip for the players recommended. Mr Thompson said that it would be a good way to encourage cricket. The chairman: It has much to recommend it.

Mr Thompson said that the association should undertake to pay the train fares of the recommended players, but not their board. Mr Burns did not think that they should tie themselves down in the manner suggested. . Mr Thompson said that there had been cases of players who came to Christchurch and stayed with friends, but .had made a charge for board. Mr Burns said that questions of finance could be gone into later. He moved: —"That the minor associations be written to and the scheme suggested to them, and that the minor associations be asked for their suggestions." Mr Jarrett said that the letters to the minor associations should state that the association was prepared to assist in financing the visits of the selected players. That did not necessarily mean that the association was prepared to bear the whole of the expense. The motion was agreed to with the addition: "The Canterbury Cricket -Association is prepared . to'_ assist in financing the trip of the. players to Christchurch.". • Coachiftg and Bowling.
