RICCARTON NEWS

STOCK-DRIVING IN THE BOROUGH A resolution that the Riccarton Borough Council should be asked to enforce strictly its present by-laws regarding stock-driving in the borough, was passed at the meeting of the Wharenui School Committee. It was complained that at the present time the council was determined not to amend its by-laws governing stockdriving, and it was rather lax in their administration. Mr P. G. Stringer, who was in the chair, said that the deputation which had recently waited on the council with reference to stock-driving, had been favourably received, and given every opportunity to state its case. Aiter some discussion, during which it was stated that even since the deputation had waited on the council, stock had been permitted on the roads before the time ruled in the by-laws, | the above resolution was passed. Community Sin?. In spite of the inclement weather, there was an excellent attendance at the community sing held last evening in the Town Hall. Mr Dan McKivett was the leader and Mr P. G. Stringer was the pianist. Many popular songs were sung. The amount raised, £1 4s Od, will be used by the Riccarton Relief Committee for the administration of its work. Another sing will be held in the same hall next Thursday evening. Relief Committee Meets. A meeting of the relief committee was held last night to discuss a proposal to discontinue collecting rations under the pound scheme. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.), the Rev. H. Ryan took the chair. After some discussion the Rev. J. A. Allan moved, and Mrs T. A. White advanced to enable the funds in the hands of the council to be paid to the trustees, and accordingly a cheque was drawn for the full amount, and forwarded to them. The Minister for Internal Affairs sent a cheque for £B, being part of the profits in "My Lucky Chance" Art union, to be used for the relief of distress. This was sent to the Malvern Relief Committee for general relief in the county. The county solicitors advised that if the council granted permission to the Darfield School Committee to erect a fence on a public road to make provision for a temporary playground, it would be liable for any accident that might occur, but that if it took! an indemnity from the school committee such indemnity would be enforce-! able. It was resolved to communicate with the committee on these lines. Patching with the council's truck had been carried out on Telegraph, Miles, Greendale-Burn-ham, Hoskyns, and Courtenay-Selwyn roads. The contracts on Racecourse Hill and Clinton's roads, and on Anson's road had been completed, and while the work on Anson's road was in progress two concrete pipe culverts were put in. The culvert over the main race at Darfield was widened by 12 feet by making up the ends, without the necessity of installing an extra pipe. The large fluming at the Kowai head had been repa'red, the defective portions of the piles being | cut away and the two main piers being re-erected on concrete bases. While I the race was slack, opportunity was j taken to clean out the main race near [the intake, ,
