THE "KILLER" KEA
Conclusive proof of the ferocity of the genuine "killer" kea was obtained this week by a "Marlborough Express" reporter who visited the offices of the Department of Agriculture to inspect the hindquarters of a sheep obtained by Mr D. S. A. Weir, the Marlborough stock inspector. The "exhibit" comprised part of the carcase of a merino wether which had been found in a dying condition by Mr J. R. Jackson, of the Leatham, after its back had been literally lorn to shreds by one of these birds. A big hole had been made in the amimal's back, despite the thickness of its fleece, and the flesh on either side of the spine had been eaten away until the fat encasing the kidneys lay exposed- Apparently the kea had been disturbed before it was able to reap the reward of its research, for the kidneys were almost intact. The sheep was still alive when found.
