RUGBY. | I | i the ranfurly SHIELD | SIXTH MATCH TO-MORROW . The Ranfurly Shield will be at j stake for the sixth time this season, j when the Canterbury and Taranaki , Rugby representatives meet at Lan-1 caster Park to-morrow. Alter the ram j thi- week the oval should be in splendid" order, and it would not be sur- j prising if the match proves the hardest that Canterbury has had to play in defence: of the shield this season. The Canterbury team has played four s eld matches in as many Saturdays and before that played Ashfourtor. and 'i,-as on tour in the I\orth Island. To morrow's match will dc tnc last of Taranaki's tour, and it ,s considered in manv quarters that the end ot a tour isW i good time for wmnins shield match. s. According to reports, however, members of the team are de'ermined to ma'ce to-monows inatch the best of the toui. The Taranaki team arrived in Christchurch from Dunedin by the express last evening, and the players are staying at Coker's Hotel. The manager of the team is Mr James McLeod, who was president of the New Zealand Rugby Union in 1920-21 and 192122, and was manager of the New Zealand team which toured Australia m UV?9. "Wo have come here for a game, and we think we have a chance of v/inning it,'' he told a reporter last evening. t he Teams, The team will practice this morning and afterwards the team for the match will be selected from the following player?; - Full-back: A. Coilm". Three-quarters: -I. Ross. W. L. Rutherford. L. Edwards, H. Hill. Five-eighths: B. Mace, K. Fookes. G. Songster. i Half-hack: W. Dymond. ' Forwards: S. Fookes. C. Wills, K. Weterc, R. Clarke (captain), R. Young, R. McLeod, E. Gargan, G. Fowler, D. Murphy. Others with the team who may be called on 'if necessary are E. Murphy and M. Burke (forwards) and J. Crawford (back). All the members of the team are ftt and looking forward to the match, but Rutherford, K. Fookes, and Dymond were medically examined last : evening. j G. T. Nolan, the full-back, and G. F. Hart, right wing three-quarter, are j not available to play for Canterbury, i The selector, Mr J. T. Burrows, has I announced the following team: — I Full-back: F. T. J. French, j Three-quarters: N. Dunshea, C. J. | Oliver, J. Hattersley. j Five-eighths: K. S. Mortlock, R. I Hazelhurst. Half-back: T. F. Mullan.

Forwards: A. I. CottreJJ, J. Wade, A.' Bowes, R K. King, G. J. HoweU, A. I Hartnell, J. E. Manchester, A. H. An- | drews. j Emergencies:—Backs: A. N. Bouterey, C. 11. McPhail, W. J. Brown. Forwards: F. J. Foley, P. Roberts, A. Bourne. Taranaki's Record. On its present tour the Taranaki team has played the following matches:—V. Wellington, lost 23-11: v. North Otago, won 14-6; v. Southland, lost 23-11; v. Otajto, won 15-14. The team is inclined to be erratic, but'is capable on occasions of producing really good football. The forwards are a solid, hard-working lot, and may be expected to give a good account of themselves. IT K. Fookes, who joined the team at Dunedin. is fit for play he will strengthen the inside backs considerably. Clarke, the captain, will be remembered tor the fine game he played in the North v. South Island match at Christchurch last year, and he was one of the outstanding! forwards on the Australian tour. Collins was fullback for New Zealand in Australia. S. Fookes has often been seen at Lancaster Park, and he represented Canterbury when he was attending the university here. Rutherford also played for Canterbury College some years ago, but was not in the Canterbury team. His play has improved greatly since then, and he is one of the Taranaki nominees for the North Island team. He plays at centrei and has been favourably compared with Caughey, the Auckland centre. His marking of Oliver will be interesting. Gargan is a forward who has played well all this season, and he also is considered to have a good chance for North Island honours. Wetere is a big, hard-working forward, who toured New Zealand with the last Maori team. TEAMS FROM CANBERRA j The following teams will represent H.M.A.S.
