ROAD TO MILFORD SOUND
SURVEY OF THE PROPOSED MOTOR TUNNEL j 1P8F.33 AS3OIMAIION TELEURAJt.) I INVERCARGILL, September 8. I The number of men engaged on the construction of the road to Milford, through the Eglinton Valley, is to be doubled almost immediately, to bring the road up to the site of the proposed motor tunnel through the Gertrude Saddle. In the meantime, a survey of the tunnel is to be made, so that the Public Works Department will be able to submit an estimate of the cost to the Cabinet. This information was given by the Fostmosler-General, the Hon. A. Hamilton in an interview to-day. Mr Hamilton is interested in the road, both as a means of absorbing unemployed men, and as an attraction to tourists. Arrangements would be made, said the Minister, to increase the 52 or 53 men at present on the work to about 100. During the summer a survey would be made of the proposed tunnel, and estimates of the cost of construction would be made. The cutting of the tunnel would depend on the cost. If the construction of the tunnel proved feasible, it would be advisable to have the road constructed to the pass, and extra mm would help to push that work forward, ~»*iu.
