SPORT AND COMPETITION

TO lIJE EDJTOH Of THB PRESSSir, —I ieel that a certain reference made by "Whipper-in" in your crosscountry running column in Thursday's edition should not be allowed to pass without comment. I refer to the passage. "Some runners and at least one of the clubs (unnamed) hold that they take up cross-country running . , . , simply for the sake of the social side of it." Surely this statement could quite reasonably be termed a pre-

posterous one, and I, for one, -would not like to think that "Whipper-in" really meant to convey the thought that the words used express. He then continues with his innuendo that "the same club would like to win if it could." I do not know at which club this undoubtedly pointed criticism is directed, but as it may quite easily be taken personally by more than one of the clubs, and as it is the opposite of being helpful, I feel that this remark need not have been made. — Yours, etc., TRAIL-LAYER.
