REVELATIONS OF HANSARD
TO TTI7, EDITOR OF THB FWWB Sir—T am not at all surprised that the Labour leaders here have ignored the boastful challenge in the letter from "Sumner" in "The Press" of Thursday. I would indeed have been surprised if they had replied to it. That would have meant a departure from a fixed Labour principle, that anonymous criticisms in the press shall be Ignored. Besides that, our local leaders are far too busy for a press controversy. They are entitled to a rest before the heavy work of Parliament begins this month. Mr Sullivan has his onerous Mayoral duties; Mr Howard adds to his manifold duties by taking journalism as a side-line, and producing a brilliant review each week; and Mr Armstrong is here, there, and everywhere, indefatigable in the service of the public, And then, of course, the by-ejection has added immensely to their usual public service, until one wonders how thev can stand up to it. But if they are too busy or if they think it beneath their dignity to reply, I am not too busy, and being a common man, I Have no dignity at all. I therefore reply to the letter from "Sumner" and challenge him to produce from Hansard some of th© passages he refers to. I imagine that "Sumner" is just playing a game of bluff, and I call his bluff. I am quite sure that whatever any Labour member said in the House he will stand to in the country, and it will take convincing proof to persuade the people that any Labour member ever said anything in Parliament that could be construed into an approval of the legion or any of its objects.—Yours, etc RADLEY. September 8, 1933.
