FIRES.

VALUABLE TOOLS DESTROYED. An electric motor, saws, sets of stocks and dies, planes, hammers, and other tools, some old wireless sets, and the spare wheel of a car, the total value of which was more than £IOO, were <?*rtroyed by fire which broke out in the workshop of Mr W. L. Gray, of 4 Grant's road, Papanui, on Saturday afternoon. Firemen from the St. Albans and central stations could do nothing but prevent the flames spreading to the house. The cause of the outbreak was the ignition of some tar, which Mr Gray was heating over a hot plate in the workshop. There was no insurance.

POLICE HOUSE DAMAGED. File broke out in the police house at Ashburton, occupied by Sergeant W. T. Kelly, at 5.10 a.m. on Saturday. Mrs Kelly noticed the reflection through a ventilator in the bedroom, and an investigation by Sergeant Kelly and his son, Mr G. Kelly, led to the discovery of the outbreak between the ceiling and the roof above the dining room. The fire was extinguished with buckets of water. Except foi* the. rafters being charred, very little damage was done. Some sacks and a box of matches were discovered in the loft.
