Judgment has been delivered by the Magistrate, Mr Levvcy, in the case of the "Southland News" against William McChesney. The clair.- was for £39 advertising costs incurred during the general election, at which the defendant was the United party candidate. Five members of his finance committee were joined as defendants, McChesney claiming that they verbally had agreed to deiray his election costs. The Magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiffs under the equity and good conscience clause, holding that the claim should be settled by the defendants jointly and severally. Cost of appeal was fixed at £lO 10s.
