WEST OF ENGLAND SOCIETY'S DANCE.

Easily the happiest event of the West of England Society's season took place on Thursday evening in the Orange Hall, when a special Cornish evening was enjoyed by some 200 members and friends, among whom was the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P. The president, Mr P. E. L. Broad, in addressing the gathering, which was representative of the four southwestern counties of England, welcomed the Mayor and the many old members, whose presence was greatly appreciated. He suggested to the Mayor that as the Mayorec was of Devonshire parentage they were both eligible for membership, and wondered why they had not previously graced the meetings. In replying, the Mayor said he was somewhat afraid to attend, fearing he would' have to bring — » interpreter. His association with the Western Counties, where he had resided for four months, had taught him, through the extreme hospitality extended, that Cornishmen really possessed the qualities for which they were famed in history. He had great pleasure in becoming a member of the society. Mr Broad had previously spoken of arranging a charity dance, and the Mayor, in describing the dire needs of the unemployed, thanked the society for its kindly feelings. He felt sure, from the valuable part the society had played in the all nations fair, that whatever they did would be successful and it would be appreciated. Between old and new dances the following excellent items were given: Master Macann (song), Mrs Temple (sketch), Miss M. Grjgor (monologue), Mr J. Flewellyn (humour), Mr S. Hood (Cornish songs), Mr H. Benson (cornet solo), Mr Rickard (monologue), and Mr Boschetti's Juvenile Orchestra (selections). Mrs Fraser and Mrs McKenzie won the lucky spot dance, and Mrs M. Ware and Mr E. Perkis won the Monte Carlo waltz. Mr F. Comyns, assisted by Boschetti's Band, supplied the music, and Mr C. W. Oliver was the master of ceremonies.
