COMPETITIONS AT RICCARTON.

THIRD NIGHT'S PERFORMANCES. The competitions at present being conducted by the members of the Riccarton Methodist circuit were advanced a stage further last night when several classes were judged. Mr L. N. Fleming, judge of the elocutionary section, who sang a bracket of three songs—"Loraine," "Idcale," and "Beware of the Maidens." The most important selection to be judged last evening was the pianoforte test selection, "Coronach," which was open to all competitors. In giving his decision in this class, the judge' said that the selection was almost a dirge, and many of the competitors had failed to emphasise this sufficiently. The winner, Miss Phyllis Wise, had given a very sympathetic interpretation. Detailed results were:— PIANOFORTE SOLO. Test Selection (Open). "Coronach." Miss Phyllis Wise (88 points) . 1 Miss M. McAllister (87 points) . 2 Mr H. G. Stevens (86 points) .. 3 RECITATION. Own Selection. Boy or Girl, 1C years and under. Miss Grace Campbell (94 points) .. 1 Miss Yvonne Dodge (88 points) .. 2 Master Victor Wise (84 points) ~ 3 RECITATION. Boy or Girl. 12 years and under. Nancy Campbell (96 points* 1 Ina Bowman (91 points) .. ■> Beverley Counsel! and Fredrick Hayes (84 points), equal .. 3 VOCAL DUET. Own Selection. Misses Eileen and Gwendoline Ryan (82 points) .. i Misses Dorothy Vogel and Doreeii Bennett (78 points) .. 2 Misses Doris Timms and Gweii Fisher (77 points) .. 3 Commenting on the children's recitations section, the judge called attention to the evident lack of self-con-sciousness in the competitors. He had had a difficult task to separate the contestants, but in the class, 16 years and under, Miss Grace Campbell's selection. "The Women of the West," had been intelligently interpreted and well delivered.
