SPORTS FIXTURES FOR TO-DAY.

RUGBY TRIAL MATCH. HAKKIER CLUBS TO HOLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. After two Saturdays of unpleasant weather, winter sports players are looking forward to a resumption of good conditions for their fixtures today. The representative match season is now very near at hand in most sports, and while interest in some of the competitions is waning, there is an increased interest in the performances of individual aspirants for representative honours. Most of Canterbury's leading Rugby. players will be seen in action on Lancaster Park oval this afternoon in a possibles v. Probables trial match commencing at 2.45. The first representative match of the season—a Ranfurly Shield game against Ashburton—will be played on the following Wednesday, while the Canterbury men will commence their northern tour immediately after, and as the composition of the Canterbury side is still very doubtful, (he players will be keen ;o show their best. There are some gaps in the provincial team, the filling of which must be giving the selector (Mr J. T. Burrows) some concern. That the chief aspirants for these positions are young and promising players is lending interest to this year's matches. To-day's trial game will give these young men their chance to earn a place in big football. A match between the Linwood and Albion senior teams will be played as a cur-tain-raiser, commencing at 1.15. League and Association. There has been a rearrangement of the draw for the Canterbury Rugby League's Thacker Shield and Vivian Cup matches, owing to the absence of a number of senior players with the representative team, which is playing Otago at Dunedin. Interesting football should be provided, however, by the matches between Hornby and Riccarton, at Hornby, Sydenham and Pirates, at Woolston Park (Thacker Shield matches), and the Vivian Cup match between Linwood and Addington, at Sydenham Park. All three games commence at 2.45 p.m. The chief match of the Association code will be that between Rangers and Nomads at English Park, which should provide fast and interesting football. Other Hurley Shield engagements will be Technical Old Boys v. Linwood, at Linwood Park, and St. Albans v. Western, at Malvern Park, y all matches commencing at 2.45 p.m. Cross-country Championships. Several Christchurch harrier clubs are holding their annual championships to-day, and these runs should provide some of the best cross-country running of the season in Christchurch. The Christchurch, University, and Baptist Clubs will hold their races over the Cashmere course, while the Methodist Club's championship run will start from the Opawa Methodist Church. All the championship fixtures should be well contested, as the clubs have a great number of promising young runners capable of challenging the leaaing harriers of Canterbury. The Anglican Club, which will hold its championship next week, and the Presbyterian Club, which decided its titles last Saturday, will run from St. Michael's schoolroom, Oxford terrace, and St. Giles's Church, Papanui road, respectively. Important Hockey Games. The meeting of the two leading teams in the Canterbury Hockey Association's senior competition, Trinity and Redcliffs, will be the high-light of the day's hockey. It is expected that an even match will result, and there should be some fast and interesting play. If Trinity win it will be in an unbeatable position in the competition. Trinity and Redcliffs meet on Hagley No. 7, University and Sydenham at Hagley No. 6, and Selwyn and Technical at Hagley No. 8. The four women's hockey matches to-day will be as follows:— Training College v. Digby's, Hagley No. 4; Southbrook v. Aranui, Hagley No 1; West Christchurch v. Pukaki.
