RELIEF FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS.
♦ MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Registrations of unemployed women and girls with the Christchurch Women's Unemployment Committee now number 281, according to a report presented at a meeting of the committee yesterday, when the Mayoress (Mrs D. G. Sullivan) presided. Twertty-two girls had been placed in positions during the last fortnight. Miss M, B. Lovell-Smith tendered her resignation as secretary to the committee, and this was accepted with regret. An appreciation of her services was put on record. • The Unemployment Board advised that the grant to the New Brighton committee had been extended. The Municipal Electricity Department advised that in future the current used at the depots would be supplied at 50 per cent, discount. Reports on general activities showed that 2237 meals had been supplied during the last fortnight. Ninetynine garments had been made and three had been repaired. Gifts received included clothing and hats from Messrs Beath and Co., and a wringer. In future girls living in rooms would be able to get tea and bread and butter at Colombo street from 8;45 a.m. to 9 a.m*. A list of rooms available had been supplied by the Council of Churches, and the premises were being inspected by Mrs Roberts and Miss Cardale. Three applications for subsidies had been granted, and the offer of a room in Dyer's Pass road free of rent had been accepted. There had been some difficulty in getting coal for girls in rooms, and it ar " n S ed that applications should be addressed direct to the director of the Metropolitan Relief .Depot.
