Mr C. Monrad, of Palmerston North, is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr A. R. Hosking, of Auckland, is a guest at the United Service Hotel. The Hon. G. J. Anderson was a passenger to Christchurch on the ferry steamer yesterday morning. He left later for the south. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., returned to Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr E. S. Brittenden, district railway traffic manager at Christchurch, returned from the West Coast last night. Mr H. D. Acland was re-elected president of the Christchurch Citi- • zens' Association at its annual meeting last night. He was warmly thanked for his presidential address. Messrs H. Rogers, G. Ashworth, and Dr. T. L. Paget (Wellington) are registered as guests at War- " ner's Hotel. Sir William Hunt, of Wellington, managing director of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., was a passenger from the north by the ferry . steamer yesterday. Dr. Edgar F. Thomson, assistant pathologist at the Christchurch Public Hospital, has been appointed bacteriologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. He will leave Christchurch to take up his new position at the end of August. Guests registered at the New City Hotel are Messrs O. C. Seivwright (Dunedin), P. S. Enting, A. E. Sceats (Timaru), C. T. Brown (Otira), W. I. Diedrichs (Kokatahi), A. Robinson (Wellington), and G. Morris (Auckland). A tribute to the work of Mr M. E. Lyons as secretary of the Business Men's Relief Committee and as a member of the Citizens' Asso- v ciation was paid by the chairman (Mr S. G. Holland) at the annual meeting last night. Mr J. A. McPherson, curator of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, was welcomed as a member of the Canterbury District Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, by the chairman (Mr T. D. Lennie), at a meeting of the council last night. Mr Lennie said that Mr McPherson would be a valuable addition to the membership of the council. Congratulations to Sir Hugh Acland upon his accession to knighthood were extended by members of the Christchurch Citizens' Association at their annual meeting last night. The chairman (Mr S. G. Holland) said the association was proud to have such a representative on the Hospital Board. His remarks were received with applause. Messrs W. Machin and A. F. Wright, who are members of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, left by last night's ferry steamer to attend a meeting of the executive, which is to be held in Wellington to-day. Mr S. G. Holland, the chairman of the general committee of the Christchurch Citizens' Association, was thanked for his work during the last two years, at the annual meeting of the association last night. The president (Mr H. D. Acland) paid him a particular tribute. Mr Holland thanked members for the willing support they had given him during his term of office. The chairman for the ensuing year will be elected at the first meeting of the general committee, and it is understood that Mr Holland will again be nominated. As a mark of sympathy with Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., and his family, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., adjourned j the Magistrate's Court yejsterday I morning for five minutes. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., senior magistrate, was associated with Mr Mosley on the bench.
